My vote is based on my surmise, not my wishes. Pure guesswork, I've never felt that "choosing a side" made much sense in a complex criminal proceeding.
I certainly don't know the whole story and I've had little interest in following the unfolding case. Honestly, I'd rather spend the time cleaning the litter-box.
I'm an officer of the HOA I live in. I own a total of 9 units, 1 for me, one for the ex, 7 for rent. Because we're not gated, and 89119 is a poor zip code with many lower rent apartments (my complex are townhouses built in 1976) and I use my garage as my exit/entry point rather than my front door which is on a minor thoroughfare, I do see some suspicious characters from time to time. If I am facing them, I smile and wave and they just keep going, sometimes responding, sometimes with a contemptuous look. I surely don't follow them and while I have yet to dial 911, that is what I would do if I didn't see them move along.
In my mind, anyone dangerous enough to arouse my suspicions is too dangerous for me to intervene with. The police are far better equipped. If I see the occasional domestic disturbance, I make enough noise in my garage to make the disputers aware that they are not private.
The police are licensed to kill. I am not.
This case shows the inadvisability of playing detective. No matter the outcome, damage has been done. Martin will be dead forever. Zimmerman will be a freak and bankrupt forever (unless he writes a successful book - not something to count on).
Now, my state is very forgiving of the use of force inside your home. The moment someone enters your home, you generally can blow them away without recourse (except bloodstains and holes in your walls). But even that is not guaranteed 100%. I have non-lethal weapons in multiple locations throughout my home. I've only once used one - a very large stun baton - and the guy ran like hell. I never even called the cops because dealing with them is never pleasant, regardless of your rightness or wrongness.
If I saw someone obviously breaking in my home or anyone else's, 911 is the only number I need.
Because of the kerfuffle level of this case, I suspect there will be a conviction and minor sentence. I repeat - I do not wish anything. I'm just responding to the poll.
