Venezuela state employees to work two-day week to save energy

Drought has severely impacted electric generation at the El Guri hydroelectric dam

Venezuela's socialist government ordered public workers on Tuesday to work a two-day week as an energy-saving measure in the crisis-hit South American OPEC country. President Nicolas Maduro had already given most of Venezuela's 2.8 million state employees Fridays off during April and May to cut down on electricity consumption. "From tomorrow, for at least two weeks, we are going to have Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as non-working days for the public sector," Maduro said on his weekly television program.

The problems in Venezuela continue to mount. The government of Nicolas Maduro has declared an economic emergency. There are now daily rolling blackouts (of up to 4 hours) due to an electricity shortage caused by low water levels at the Guri hydroelectric dam which provides 75% of Venezuela's electricity. The government says the electricity rationing will last for at least 40 days. Low water levels are also effecting water supply and pressure. The prices of staple items is growing exorbitant and supermarket shelves are becoming empty. Inflation skyrocketed 141% in 2015 and could increase by another 500% in 2016. The government is cash strapped due to low global oil prices. Venezuela's economy shrank 5.7% in 2015 and is expected to contract an additional 8% this year. The Bolivar (Venezuela's currency) is now worth less than a penny on the black-market exchange. The nations hard-currency reserves are severely depleted. Venezuela owes over $10 billion in debt payments which will be due in October and November. The country will certainly default. No eggs, no milk, low water pressure, electricity rationing, increasing layoffs. Social unrest is climbing.

"40 days"... sounds biblical.

He may be removed.

Mr. Maduro has characterized the effort as a coup attempt. “They go around saying ‘Our hour has come,’” he said of his opponents on television Tuesday night. “Your hour will never come.”

To hold a recall vote, opposition activists must first collect the signatures of one percent of eligible voters. In a second stage, 20 percent of voters would have to agree to the recall for it to be held. Mr. Maduro’s opponents would then have to win the recall with more votes than he received in his initial election, just under 51 percent.

Were Mr. Maduro to be removed this year, elections for a new president would be called.

I could feel sorry for the Venezuelans, if they hadn't voted that dictator into office back then. So, I guess, they are now paying the just price.

Yep, in all honesty though, this was sped up by the massive decline in global oil. The socialists would have enjoyed more time if oil was trading at 2014 prices. Look at Russia as well, and of course Brazil isn't doing much better, not to mention Canada's rich oil sands are systematically being shut down and workers sent packing. These oil prices are hurting a lot of nations that have built their entire economies around the high price of oil. Luckily places like Canada, and Russia have alternative economies and markets to relax on while the trends stay low. Nations like Brazil, and Venezuela are not so lucky.

Awesome, Obama loves socialism, so when is going to give us Fridays off?

Simple solution, raise the minimum wage and legalize pot. That fixes everything.

All of Venezuela's, Brazil's, and Russia's economic problems are a result of low OIL prices. It is quite likely a covert agenda to attempt to break the BRICS countries to save the USDollar from default. The BRICS Nations were becoming a viable alternative to the NWO a/k/a Global Banking Hegemon that must either get control of all currencies or face overwhelming debt default. Oil has begun to rise because even a Nation as wealthy as Saudi Arabia can't survive on the current low prices. The West is attempting to change the BRICS governments during the economic crisis and will likely rue the day when recovery begins. I make note that OIL has gone from 28 to 45 in 2016. The US Dollar has dropped 3-4%. Perhaps the dam is breaking. World prices should change by Free Market principles, not covert collusion. Of course, if you have a debt based economy, there is no alternative except collusion.

Two more years till the people of Venezuela might see some real change.

What they really need to do is amend their LGBT bathroom policies.

They all have debt based economies. People are stupid.

I read somewhere this morning that Venezuela is in such dire economic straits that they don't have enough money to print money.

This just proves how efficient the Venezualan government workers are compared to U.S. workers. What they can accomplish in two days it takes our people five.

i don't know, guys, a five day weekend sounds pretty boss. i'd settle for three.

;)

Now is the time to buy real estate in Venezuela. ;)

nah, wait a bit....you'll get a much better deal later, and you won't have to deal with the social strife or the worry over whether the government is going to confiscate your property.

Frank Marshall Davis was Obama's mentor and he was a communist.

there has been any communist since the communist witch hunt times ?

Absolute Nonsense !

Corrupt Socialist central planning is to blame for Venezuela's economic problems.

Chavez apropriated Venezuela's wealth creating industries and ran them into the ground. Productivity dropped off precipitously in every industry he stole, all under the pretense of " fairness and equality "

Eventually the State decided that a economy absolutley dependent on a historically volatile commodity was the way to go.

He passed laws making outsourcing illegal and laws protecting workers to the point where its almost impossible to fire a unproductive employee

Thanks to that Venezuela has the lowest productivity rates in the continent

You realize Venezuela has to import coffee ? Venezuela has to import allot of things, food included

Its a economy run by a bunch of corrupt backwards Socialist who have no concept of the efficiencies of Free market principles.

They defaulted on their debt, burned their creditors and started printing and since no importer wants to be paid with worthless Bolivars their shelves are bare and their people suffer.

Venezuela is what happens ( its what ALWAYS happens ) when you give Leftist the ultimate authority to do what they want

Its a disaster
