Venezuelan intelligence agents have detained a senior aide to opposition leader Juan Guaidó after a raid on his Caracas home, say legislators.


Damage at Mr Marrero's residence in Caracas.


Maduro may have crossed the intervention Rubicon if Mr. Marrero is returned as a corpse.

Kidnapping Guaidó’s #2 (Chief of Staff) is a serious and calculated move on the part of Maduro. He is betting the US won't up the ante significantly.

In the past month 1,000 Venezuelan soldiers have fled to Columbia. Still, not enough to seriously weaken the Maduro regime.

I'm at somewhat of a loss here to understand Maduro's strategic thinking. Venezuela is diplomatically and economically isolated. Oil exports are sanctioned.

Without monies from oil exports, Venezuela's economy will quickly putrefy due to its already advanced state of decay.
 

What right has the US to make any " intervention " into Venezuelan territory or internal affairs ?

You seem to think they have , I wonder on what element of law your are basing it on

Venezuelan nationalism and Chavismo are stronger than the US and its allies understood. A significant bloc of the population are likely to resist this external regime change by any and all means at their disposal. That significant bloc might range from as low as 10% and as high as 30% of the adult population of Venezuela (about 20 million adults) or between 2 and 6 million true believers. That is why the risk of regime-change induced civil war is so dangerous as it could cause these loyalists to take up arms against the badly divided opposition, leading to a blood bath. That is also why the "democratic opposition" knows it cannot win power democratically against Chavistas present and former and so wants to use anti-democratic and unconstitutional means to seize power by force. Only then can they begin to dismantle the allegience which so many Venezuelans have to Chavismo and its central cult of personality which looms over all Venezuelan politics today. That reprogramming will be violent and lethal if Latin American history is repeated again in Venezuela by the opposition.

Here we have a super power bringing a country, whose leadership they want replacing, to its knees via sanctions . If that fails or becomes too protracted the plan be is to foment civil war and/or military intervention.

The same people that are bemoaning alleged Russian influence in US internal political affairs are some of those cheer leading for the above in as slam dunk a case of hypocritical BS as it is possible to witness

And it wasn't 'the police'. Get your propaganda facts straight. It was Maduro's intelligence service (SEBIN).

Where is he being held? What are the specific charges?

The SEBIN are both an intelligence and a counter-intelligence organisation as well as a political police force. They ate like the CIA, the FBI, the Treasury Department's Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security all rolled into one. They have Been accused of human rights violations (with good reason in my opinion) but they are much better behaved than the Venezuelan secret police institutions which preceded the Bolivarian Revolution in 1999 the abuses of which were overlooked by the US because the Venezuelan Government did as it was told. Unfortunately the sEBIN's behaviour and alleged abuses have been on the up-tick since the death of Hugo Chavez and his replacement by President Maduro. Also the record of SEBIN and other law enforcement agencies in Venezuela are far better than their counterparts in Brazil, Columbia and Argentina, all allies of the US in the unconventional warfare, regime change campaign being led by the US against Venezuela.

As to the location of Guaido's aid, my bet would be that he is languishing in the infamous La Tumba in Caracas.

Regarding the 12 Americans allegedly being held by Venezuelan authorities, I wonder how many of them were like the five American heavily armed mercenaries (and two Serbians) arrested and then illegally wisked out of Haiti for trying to steal 80 million dollars worth of Venezuelan petro-aid money from the Haitian people for the corrupt and embattled pro-US President of Haiti?

Dictators tend not to have free elections and the support of the lowest rung of society

Juan Guaido ( read Juan white man ) has the interests of ruling white elite whose loyalty is to money and the US

You have no business there and would scream like Banshees if your own political system was usurped by Latin Americans to install someone they wanted,

But hey , there's no law against being a hypocrite.

You must have missed the word " free " in all of that

The truth is that since the Bolivarian Revolution the Venezuelan people have had umpteen elections and referendums , so much so it makes comparison to the Western " democracies " somewhat of an embarrassment

Your unwillingness to comment on the number of free and fair elections and referendums that have occurred since the Bolivarian Revolution only shows that your wish to portray Maduro as a " dictator " fail miserably and your willingness to support a man that never even contested an election and declared himself leader of the country just compound the utter hypocrisy of your views

Not in Venezuela since the Bolivarian Revolution they haven't

You are supporting the wouldbe dictator and calling the man that stood in and won the election a " dictator " in as obvious a perversion of the term as is possible and in as hypocritical way as is also possible

You have nil credibility because of these things AND because of the fact that you would scream like a Banshee if Venezuelans tried to put in to the Whitehouse people you neither voted for or never even contested the elections because they wanted to select who should govern you

The hypocrisy is staggering
 

Lets see.

Maduro has:

Jailed some of his political opposition.
Attempted to jail others of his political opposition.
Forbidden desperately needed aid.
Maduro controversially set up a new constituent assembly with the power to rewrite the constitution, or to bypass and even dissolve the opposition-led National Assembly.


Its beginning to look a lot like Dictatorship.
 

Regardless of whatever Maduro has done or hasn't done, and for whatever reasons , valid or not , you need to answer a question


What gives you the right to meddle in Venezuelan democracy/governance ?

Answer this and we can then move on
