The BBC video tries to paint the working conditions of Venezuelan gold miners as atypically bad. The conditions are bad but not really that different from precious metal miners all over South and Central America and Africa.

Venezuela is a large producer of gold and diamonds due to rich deposits found in its northern mountains. The gold sold by Venezuela to turkey was not bullion but raw gold from its mines. Therefore the gold was never counted as part of Venezuela's gold reserves. Thus the 40% figure is not accurate.

They are not selling gold to take care of themselves, they are doing it because they need foriegn money in their supply. Venezuala is nowhere near as broke as media makes it out to be, however money is only good if people will take it, and venezuala has hyperinflation going on. Meaning the country could have 100 billion in usd worth of their own currency and no one would take it because the hyper inflation means that currency would keep dropping in value as soon as it is had, meaning everyone except those who instantly use it to purchase from the originating country lose value every day by holding their currency.

This has led the govt to seek foreign currencies like the euro, which other nations will accept for trade for things like food medicine etc, since the euro is stable. The reality is can you blame venezuala for selling gold since no one wants a currency that loses value by the day, or blame countries for not wanting such a currency and demanding a stable one, the reality is you should not blame either for that, if anything you should blame venezuala for poor monetary policy, not for selling gold to feed their people.

Hezbollah/Chekry Harb is actually based in Columbia and uses Venezuela as an access route to the sea. It launders its ill-gotten gains into both Columbian pesos and Venezuelan Bolivars. So why is Pompeo not calling for the overthrow of the Columbian Regime? Hint: it's a non-socialist, right-wing regime, which often is setting aside its own national interests in favour of US interests in the region and across the globe. In addition to exporting cocaine Columbia provides many shady American allies with mercenaries to guard those regimes' economic interests and to fight their foreign wars. One hates the Chavistas with a blinding passion and one is sympathetic to their goals but not to their corruption and incompetence. Both agree however that this is a challenge for Venezuelans to solve themselves and that outside states should not become entangled in Venezuela's domestic issues.

Then relax the sanctions and financial/economic restrictions and allow the Venezuelan state to buy the necessary supplies to relieve some of the shortages which the West has imposed on Venezuela. That will reduce the outflow of Venezuelan migrants and may even reverse it. Plus the return of upto three-million pissed-off Venezuelans former migrants to Venezuela might tip the balance and give the opposition the demographic boost needed to legitimately change the Venezuelan Government by ballot rather than by bullet.
