Vaping Links to Covid Risk Are Becoming Clear (link)

New York Times said:
Since the start of the pandemic, experts have warned that the coronavirus — a respiratory pathogen — most likely capitalizes on the scarred lungs of smokers and vapers. Doctors and researchers are now starting to pinpoint the ways in which smoking and vaping seem to enhance the virus’s ability to spread from person to person, infiltrate the lungs and spark some of Covid-19’s worst symptoms.

“I have no doubt in saying that smoking and vaping could put people at increased risk of poor outcomes from Covid-19,” said Dr. Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir, a pediatric pulmonologist at Columbia University. “It is quite clear that smoking and vaping are bad for the lungs, and the predominant symptoms of Covid are respiratory. Those two things are going to be bad in combination.”
Why then are so many willing to lock us down rather than to stop those that smoke and vape from destroying themselves? We have pulled the plug on the economy. We have deprived young people of their education. Why? To protect the self-destructive. And don't say "the elderly." On Monday I was narrowly beaten in tennis by an opponent who turns 94 on Friday.

So you want to ban all forms of smoking, correct?

Not looking for a debate but i have read opinions that contradict whst your claiming. They say smokers are less at fisk to it than non smokers because the receptors are blocked by tar

Don't lock me down and I won't ask.

Um, what? You’re arguing that vaping and smoking are causing this and if we did something about that you wouldn’t have to be locked down.

So? What’s the solution here? Ban all forms of smoking and vaping, yes? Or are you TRYING TO MAKE A BROADER POINT

The government collects a lot, I mean A LOT of tax revenue from smokers and vapers. What advantage would it be for them to stop them?

Where did the poster argue that vaping and smoking are causing this?

It’s gonna stop the covid.

Interesting, hard to believe that smokers are at less risk though.

Im not claiming they are but opinions are all over the map

Yeah, like they say, opinions are like assholes. I don't think a person who smokes is going to do better with Covid than others who dont.

With any luck and a slightly longer cane he could have beaten you more soundly.

this COVID **** is making me even more happy that i quit smoking years ago. thank you, Allen Carr. who knows if that will save me from this mess, but it doesn't hurt.

I guess you hate me.

This guy is a true national treasure. He's a former recent member of the governing board of the schools in my state and left because his wife needed him. He reads about three books a week. And he does not walk with a cane.

Now, please cut the hatred. I've done nothing to hurt you.

So what you're saying is that everyone who died of Covid19 was a smoker?

Not every one. But it sure doesn't help.

I personally dissuaded someone from buying cigarettes at a supermarket courtesy counter. She asked first the Customer Service specialist, then me, for which brand of cigarettes was the "strongest." I didn't know her but I said, "just for me, I'm worried, given what's going on now please don't buy any." Just my good deed for the day.

Your concern is reasonable... but these days it seems that everything increases risk of covid...

whyyy, rumor has it that tomorrow's NYT headline is to read:
TOILET PAPER USE CAUSES INCREASED COVID RISK OF DEATH

A little levity... :)
Nice night to ya' J

Don't say 'the elderly' because you played a freak of nature in tennis once and were beaten?

I bet you aced your science and your statistics courses.

Just out of curiosity, since you have looked so deeply into this, what percentage of the total COVID-19 deaths are senior citizens vs the percentage that were smoker/vapers? That is the number that will truly support the case you are making. On the other hand, that number could spell the end of this nonsense of a thread.

:lamo You've tried. At this point, anyone attempting to make covid seem less than the danger it is is actively damaging the nation.

In france (and other countries) they noticed that people needing hospitalization due to Covid19 did not represent the population of smokers vs non smokers. Smokers are 25-30% of the population but were only 5% of hospitalizations. The theory is that nicotine reduces the cytokine storm which is what seems to kill a lot of covid patients. so smoking may reduce some of the dangerous effects or lower the infection rate, they really dont know yet. But we do know that nicotine has a definite benefit to reduce the cytokine storm. this paper is from 2013

Inflammation is the body's first line of defense against infection or injury, responding to challenges by activating innate and adaptive responses. Microbes have evolved a diverse range of strategies to avoid triggering inflammatory responses. However, some pathogens, such as the influenza virus and the Gram-negative bacterium Francisella tularensis, do trigger life-threatening “cytokine storms” in the host which can result in significant pathology and ultimately death. For these diseases, it has been proposed that downregulating inflammatory immune responses may improve outcome.

Targeting the “Cytokine Storm” for Therapeutic Benefit

Nicotine has a documented benefit in reducing the cytokine storm but has its downside

"Nicotine is a nonselective agonist of the α7Ach receptor and is able to suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines by mimicking the binding of acetylcholine. It has been demonstrated that nicotine can selectively reduce the inflammatory response in a number of infection scenarios, including Legionella pneumophila (54) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (55) infection; however, it is highly unlikely that nicotine will ever be used clinically due to its toxicity, addictive nature, and lack of specificity."
