VA denies 1,877 gun purchases in July

1,102 people were denied purchase of gun during first month of Va.'s new one-handgun-per-month law | Virginia | richmond.com

About 59% of the Va guns denied purchase in July were because of the 1 gun a month law. More appropriately a 1 gun per 30 days. Alot was simply confusion over when the 30 day clock started.

Personally I think it is a stupid law and will not have any significant change in gun violance.

A few interesting points from the article.
The 1,102 gun purchase denials for exceeding the handgun limit accounted for 59% of all denials statewide in July, firearm transaction records show. Denials for having a felony conviction ranked a distant second, with 142. That was followed by denials for being a user of unlawful drugs, at 140.

Good job catching 242 people who shouldn't own firearms. I do so wonder what the other almost 500 denials were for.

Several gun dealers said the new law has also triggered a rise in the number of people who are acquiring concealed carry permits. Virginians with valid permits are exempt from the law and can purchase more than one handgun per month

It's good that an honest citizen is able to have a work around this poorly thought out law.

It's good that an honest citizen is able to have a work around this poorly thought out law.

Seems like someone has a case to sue. Purchasing arms is bearing arms, so if they are being prohibited from purchasing arms so arbitrarily, the courts should agree this law is unconstitutional. And its not good to deny arms to EX felons either. If they are not in jail they have a right to defend themselves like anyone else. Theres no exemption in the second amendment for having once committed a crime, or for doing drugs.

Time based gun volume purchase limitations... one of the more useless 'gun control' concepts out there.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like a very effective law. All a guy has to do is wait a bit.
 
Most denials are because of an overloaded system or a very common name problem. If the FBI has not anstered the dealers call within three working days the gun store at their discretion, has the right to complete the sale without any more interference from the FBI.
If an individual who is legal to buy and own guns that repeatedly gets denied, they can request a personal number to put on Form 4473 and that will make his/her/alphabets transaction go smoothly.
As for the one gun per month plan? That makes buying a matched pair of revolvers or Semi auto's a but complicated. You need a new Governor of a different State to live.

Effective at stopping gun violance proppably not so much. It will be effective as a campaign tool so a politician can say they did something without really accomplish anything. But the intended base willing to beleive anything anti gun is good will eat it up.

under Heller and McDonald, the state government cannot deny you the right to buy or own a gun. How does the government of VA become empowered to deny a citizen acquiring another gun merely because that same citizen engaged in a lawful action within thirty days?

it flies in the face of a negative restriction. The government which doesn't have the power to ban pistols, doesn't suddenly gain the power to do so, because a law abiding citizen engaged in legal behavior within a certain period of time

If the constitution was taken as seriously as it should be-he would be charged for constitutional rights violations under 42 USC 1983, if not treason
