Utah Gov. Gary Herbert to sign resolution calling porn a 'health hazard'

Is porn a huge problem in Utah, I thought Mormons did not buy or view the stuff, starting to think there is some deeper problem there than what a law can address. Book burning on the Tabernacle Steps tonight, Film at 11.

not everyone in Utah is a Mormon of course. per the wiki it was 58% 8 years ago. And just like any church a lot of people have been members but are not religiously involved but he church still counts them as members so I'm sure its much less than that that are actually practicing Mormons.

Yeah, the moron church is such a hypocritical little club. CTR!

not disputing that
however, latter day saints do tend to be very family oriented
and well adjusted - for the most part

if i attend a scouting function with a LDS church based group, those kids and leaders will be squared away, without exception. and yes, they do tend to be square

All major religions believe some whacky crap. The biggest issues I have with the Mormon church is it's secrecy and how it seems to ostracize people and families. Jehova's do this to an extreme. It's really despicable behavior.

JW's are another group who have my respect
as a union official, finding an honest manager to deal with is a wonderful thing
the head o personnel was JW and she would not lie or mislead. she might decline to answer, but she was absolutely honest
a very rare trait in this day and age

What gets me about JW's is... when I'm getting evangalized by another religion, usually it's believable that it's coming from a good place. They actually think they can help you. With JW's, they think only 144,000 of them will go to heaven and recruiting you only helps them rise in status so that they can be one of the 144,000. So when they come to my door trying to evangalize me, all I'm thinking is, "Quit pretending you give a **** about me... You are only looking out for yourself."

Another conservative using his personal religious beliefs to push a political agenda. Hopefully, folks in his home State respect the 1st Amendment, just as much as they do the second, or for that matter the old separation of church/state . Cafeteria constitutionalism, pick and choose which amendments suit there needs.

I would like to see a source on that and how severe these "problems" are.

In any event, it's a free society and the government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation. Since time began, man has tried and failed to legislate morality.

Further, I do believe the US has some far greater problems the good governor of Utah might want to give consideration.

from the article
The resolution has no punishing powers; it doesn't specifically ban pornography in the state.

the tantrums in here are over , literally, nothing..... i'ts just a "sense of the State" kind of thing... it carries no legal weight.

the other piece of legislation does, though... it's good legislation addressing the reporting of child porn. ( though some will surely have a problem with as well ... it's " legislating morality" too)

ok.. here's your chance to make the arguement about how this legislation is unconstitutional.

go.

Porn isn't a "health hazard" but sometimes it definitely gives people bad sexual ideas. That's no reason to ban or attack it though, lots of things give people crazy ideas.

It isn't just anything, it's the state involving itself in the bedrooms of the nation. Morality is not the business of government.

If Utah is only getting around to establishing child porn laws now, they are seriously backward

morality isn't the business of government?... yeah, because laws have nothing to do with what's right/wrong or good/bad .... seriously, reality is calling, it wants you to come home.

I'd have a problem if they tried to ban porn or attach some sort of punishment to it... but they didn't, so I don't give a ****.... Utah made a bill that says porn is bad for your health( which it often is).. .whoopti-do... who cares.
this piece of legislation literally does nothing, so I remain unconcerned ... .call me when something substantive actually comes around to get bent out of shape over.

well, as i understand, they are updating statutes that require certain people to report child porn if they come across it ... but if you want to be a dunce and believe they are just now getting around to establishing child porn laws , there's not much i can say.

Yeah. Sort of reminds me of those photo montages of people actually attempting Pinterest DIY projects.

OMG this is hilarious coming from Utah, one of the country's top customers.
Here's a snapshot of the prevailing tastes of Utah smut lovers:

Milf's?? Shouldn't that be "sister-milfs?"
Teen, that's no surprise either.

"An average of 5.47 people per 1000 broadband subscribers pay for porn in Orrin Hatch's home state. (Utah also leads in porn consumption among the general population and dial-up users, in case you're wondering.)"

Oh good heavens....dial-up. Must be coming from some of those Fundamentalist Mormon compounds.
I thought conservatives wanted big government OFF their backs.

Why should I? If that is how you interpreted my post, that is your issue.

Then again I do not take much stalk in what some ideologue from UT is spouting, no different than any other ideologue from either party.

Does make you wonder why such a State, much of it rural, consumes so much adult entertainment. Perhaps this particular politician should question folks from his own state on there addiction, instead of attacking a legal, and protected 1st Amendment industry.

well if its the online porn capital perhaps that is why the gov agreed to the bill I dunno. like thrilla said though it doesn't actually have any teeth to it its just a statement really.

Porn does not need to be sold at stores.

that is why the Internet was created, for personal viewing, at home, with your dog watching....

Ya know, you could have done without the last four words of that post.

Perhaps you should read that the bill doesn't actually do anything so isn't doing anything to the first amendment. the bill , to me, is a waste of time but other than that no big deal.

No.

It is not the business of government. Whose "morality" should we impose? Christian morality, Sharia morality?

Again I say this is a simple sham on the part of the governor to make it look like he's actually doing something. So much ado about nonsense

Well, if the FLDS keeps churning out lost boys, pretty soon the actual Mormon population will be a distinct minority, and the Jack Mormons and Lost Boys will be the majority, with the FLDS in close competition for second place.
HA! Bet you didn't see THAT coming, didja? See, the Mormon Church no longer "recognizes" FLDS as true Mormons.
FLDS would beg to differ however...they see big church as the infidel temple. And it's the FLDS who are breeding like bunny labbits.
They'z be breedin and bleedin, bleedin the beast, that is.

I seez me sum sectarian divides, izz whut ah seez.

I still say that's where all that dial-up activity is coming from, too!

It can't "give" anything because it's an inanimate object, like a gun.

I'll just toss the resolution into the dust bin of I don't care what you thinks. I do support the legislation requiring IT professionals to report findings of child pornogtaphy to the authorities though.

In UTAH???
Ain't likely to happen...those priesthood holders need to find them some sister-wives and sometimes the pickinz are slim inside the compound.

you brought up the Constitution, not me....

ok?... you seem awfully flustered for a person who seemingly doesn't care.

Does make you wonder why such a State, much of it rural, consumes so much adult entertainment. Perhaps this particular politician should question folks from his own state on there addiction, instead of attacking a legal, and protected 1st Amendment industry.
nah, I don't wonder why people watch porn, ain't none of my business..... and the fact that folks are addicted to porn pretty much says it is, or can be, a health issue
most of us like our porn, and most of us can agree it's also has some negative health effects... there's really nothing in this declaration that's controversial at all....and yet, here we are, pretending it is.
I don't really care that people attack legal things... I only really pitch a fit when they take substantive action against them...... words are cheap, actions are everything.

No.

It is not the business of government. Whose "morality" should we impose? Christian morality, Sharia morality?
now that's the $64,000 question we all want answered and where the problems come in ..... you'll never get a correct answer, but it's always fun trying.

Again I say this is a simple sham on the part of the governor to make it look like he's actually doing something. So much ado about nonsense
it might be just a publicity thing, and that's fine... it really doesn't matter if it's not actionable legislation.
there's certainly no reason to throw fits over it.

anyways, i'm out... the anti-religious bigots are out in force in here, and I'll end up getting dinged if i hang around.
see ya around :)

My brothers wife (ex wife actually) once tried to hook me up with a girl she knew. we were talking about small towns and she said she was a small town in northern Arizona but when I asked her about it she didn't want to talk about it.
Turns out she was from Colorado City Arizona, which is an FLDS polygamist town pretty much. She ran away from it at 16.
I worked with another kid once who was part of another big polygamist clan or his family was also. He also left. I kept telling him she should have wrote a book about it he had a lot of insight.
They would control every aspect of your life. They owned lots of companies so most members of worked for one of them. you got paid but the account you couldn't take money out of because it was also in one of the senior people of the groups name.
so you had to ask them if you wanted money and of course they would want ot know what you were doing with it. lots more he was telling me it was eye opening.
