With US looking for short term alternatives to Russian oil, approaching old enemies doesn't seem to be a taboo. In the last few days there seem to have been much activity on this.

Will Russia's attack on Ukraine help thaw US-Venezuela relations?

The big crux is of course Maduro's own relationship with Putin's Russia. However he might see the writing on the wall, he is making money right now selling oil to China. But if Russian oil becomes much cheaper Beijing might just drop Venezuelan oil. Another sign that the winds have changed direction is that Venezuela recently released two jailed US citizens.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Russia is another buyer of Venezuelan oil, but of Russia can't export oil as before, they won't need as much imports, because then the oil they used to export now goes to the home market. Meaning Venezuela risks losing two of their top customers.

Hopefully Putin will agree to build a few missile bases in V and force the stupid US President to take his begging bowl elsewhere.

I see the US is making the same old mistakes all over again.

Turning a blind eye to all manner of tyrants in the name of sticking it to the Russians.

In other words, our foreign policy from 1950 or so to 1991.
This could potentially get us more oil faster than having oil companies start developing their unused leases, which would take a while.

Gee, and all it takes is supporting a brutal tyrant whose spent the last decade or so starving his own people. Yeah, pass.

That concern can be part of the negotiations.

There’s flat out no excuse for supporting a tyrant like Maduro, no matter how much one yells “but Russia!”
We buy oil from iran, iraq, saudi arabia, (up until recently) russia, etc.

Its just going to be that way until our technology matures to the point we get off oil.

More insanity and stupidity from our government.

And turning a blind eye to Saudi atrocities(or Iranian ones, for that matter) is despicable.

There’s zero reason to ignore Maduro’s crimes.

Ok, I guess by that standard, we should just get off oil.

The idea that we have to back Nicolas Maduro or else the country will go back to the 1880s is idiotic.
almost all of oil imports comes from autocratic countries.

Again, the idea that we need to back Maduro or else the country will go back to the 1880s is absurd.
The shortages we would face if we stop buying oil from autocratic societies might not be 1880, but our economy would suffer like crazy.

If you find it to be absurd, then so be it.

Our economy has managed to do just fine without backing Nicolas Maduro, actually.
