Interestingly, Texas has way more cases than NY. That probably means more deaths eventually.

Maybe.. but if you look at the 'death' timeline, NY's deaths were early in the pandemic, when doctors did not have as much information about reducing the mortality, or the treatment options were not yet known. Even if the texas death rate catches up, it will because of a lot more cases than NYS. That is possible. El Paso is getting hammered enough that they just instituted a curfew.

No mystery there. Those are 4 most heavily populated states with more than a quarter of the total US population between them.

El Paso is not “getting hammered” it’s just that local officials are ******s

yeah, it really sucked that our most populous area was hit first. makes sense of course but if it hit Wyoming first they'd be a lot less dead (if we actually acted to stop the spread).

Well, that is the pattern other epidemics have happened in the past, the high density gateways got hit first, and the it went into the rural areas. NYS is getting hit a bit more, but with school (particuarly college), and being indoors more, it was expected. I hope the targeted by zip code to isolate clusters approach works, so the whole state does not have to shut down again. People do take wearing masks seriously, but not everyone.
