WASHINGTON – The number of people in the U.S. who are in poverty is on track for a record increase on President Barack Obama's watch, with the ranks of working-age poor approaching 1960s levels that led to the national war on poverty.

Census figures for 2009 — the recession-ravaged first year of the Democrat's presidency — are to be released in the coming week, and demographers expect grim findings.

It was under President Bush when the economy went south big time. There is no way you can legitimately blame the poverty level on President Obama.

Sure we can, his policies and plans, his spending and his goals have hurt the economy, kept it down and the future looks bleak BECAUSE of him. Cap and Trade, Obamacare, higher taxes, more regulations, more uncertainty, whatever problems "Bush" caused, Obama's only made far worse.

It was under a Democrat Congress that the economy went south, big time. The addition of a larger Democrat majority and a Democrat president is causing it to go farther south, at a faster rate.

BTW, which one of Bush's policies caused the recession?

The policy that business (in this case Wall Street and the Banks are self regulating) is self regulating.

I'm sorry, but President Bush never would have let things get this bad! This president we have doesn't give a **** about people. What Obama is doing is not working, yet he keeps doubling down on failed policies. He wants us all dependent. That's the only answer I can come up with. He's not even the least bit embarassed about this or the thousands of people practically rioting a while back over applications for housing. He's an embarassment, and I'm embarassed that this great country has so many without housing and depending on food stamps etc. There's no excuse for it.
He's killed so many jobs, I don't know when we'll ever recover.

Of course he doesn't care about the American people. Look at the drilling moratorium.

The President never really has that much affect over the economy. It is Congress. And frankly Congress for many years have done a terrible job, which lead us to where we are today.

The job losses bottomed out. It's not because of anything that goofball did.

we know that his claims that his massive waste of public funds would keep unemployment below 8.5% was a bright and shining lie

that's what we get for electing an incompetent pretty boy with less experience than a "bimbo from alaska"

obama's 2000 page, thoroughly inscrutable wall street reform, even more unread (probably cuz it's so much more escoteric) than the model obamacare, EXEMPTS fannie and fred, they who more than anyone brought us all here

Sweeping reform, but not for Freddie, Fannie - Business - Eye on the Economy - msnbc.com

speaking of regulation

we also know that deepwater drillers were exempted from epa environmental impacts, that drilling permits were expedited by the mms

in other words, get real

Remember neither Bush nor Obama had or has unlimited powers, so I think its time to look at the big picture rather than focusing all policies on one candidate that has to say what people want to hear, and in the end has very little power.

In my opinion the recession started during Bushes terms because of his influence and the recession is obviously not getting any better under the leadership of Obama either.

yes

of course he doesn't care about us, look how he told us all to shut up, look how he asked us to rat out our fishy neighbors, look how he sues all of us in arizona, look how he wants to move ksm to manhattan despite our repeated expressions of NO (let alone new yorkers') simply because he knows best...

of course he doesn't care about us, look how he CRAMMED health care down our wide awake windpipes, how just 24 hours before bart stupak switched, allowing for passage, he was willing to DEEM the damn thing...

look how he gives himself a B+ on oprah (A- when health care passes), look how he vacations and schmoozes, goes to copenhagen to get the olympics, off to oslo to nab the nobel...

it's TWO things---the ECONOMY and the MAN

one's a disaster, the other a disgrace

If you keep looking in the rear view mirror eventually you get into a wreck.

Exactly... If I wasn't sure before I was after that. I also think the slow response was intentional. My guess is he wanted it to be even a bigger disaster than it was. Then he could get more people in favor of shutting down drilling and passing cap and tax.
I don't know why he cares though, he'll do what he wants anyway. The more the people are against something, the more he favors it.

i am astonished that for the third time today i must point out fundamentally that THIS president as head of THIS particular party in power in parliament is RESPONSIBLE for passage of major legislations that WOULD NOT have passed had he not twisted and bought and threatened, ie, had he not acted like a party leader

it happened right in front of everyone: THIS president DIRECTED the members of THIS party to walk THIS plank

the avoidance of responsibility around here is really most unleaderly-like

which is also part of the problem

If you keep looking in the rear view mirror eventually you get into a wreck.
Those people who have lung cancer can look back when they smoked like a chimney, which is good metaphor for what we have today.

Do you have any concept of what is happening, why it's happening, and how long it will take to undue what W. did?

Any at all?

The talking points from the partisan right perpetuate this microwave-dinner, high-speed internet mentality.

The events of 2008 were 8-10 years in the making. Pulling out of it could take as long or longer.

In case you forgot, the stock market crashed in 1929, then there was a brief upturn in 1930 and we finally bottomed out in the winter of 1932.

We're not out of the woods yet and I haven't heard a comprehensive workable plan from the GOP -- just a lot of "we'd promote job creation and investment..." BFG.

According to Reps, everything the Dems are doing is wrong, but the reasons aren't exactly clear -- just broad brush 'socialism' talking point nonsense.

They seem more concerned with gaining back political power than actually helping.

Do you have any concept of what is happening, why it's happening, and how long it will take to undue what W. did?

Why stop with W?

Why don't we go further down the road towards, the "entitlement" concept? First introduced by socialism, i.e. Karl Marx, communism, and most significantly for us, FDR and "The New Deal", followed by Lyndon Johnson.

Johnson and the Dems figured out intelligently that they could buy the "lower class" votes with handouts financed by taxes from the "rich". Deceptive bull**** at its heart since businesses and people who make money as owners of business, simply pass on taxes as a part of doing business. That raises the cost of goods so the "poor", who allegedly benefited by getting stuff paid for by the "rich", end up paying the tax through the back door (their back door) via higher prices.
