It has now come to light that the US postal service is underfinanced and that the Republican Party under D. Trump planned do weaken it still further. :(

Do you still think that the US postal service is the best in the world - like all US things are always the best things in the world?

Works just fine for me.

Those who think the US Post Service is great have never left the US, probably.

asking an American if he knows whether Maine and Hawaii are in the same country

This question I asked for a very good reason!
It is your fault if you did not understand!
Irony seems to be completely lost on you.

... intentions to bash the USPS, something you know zero about?

I know a lot about it - and I know a lot about other postal services. So I can compare. :) :2wave:

It seems I have thrown the cat among the pigeons - or set the fox among the chickens.

Any comments on that:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Postal Service faced more questions and a federal lawsuit Wednesday over mail disruptions, despite assurances by President Donald Trump’s postmaster general of no more service changes until after the November election — a pledge made only after a public outcry.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told her he has no intention of restoring removed blue mailboxes or sorting equipment and no plans for employee overtime. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said officials are withholding information about DeJoy’s selection to the job. With the agency in turmoil, civil and voting rights advocates are suing to bring mail operations back to normal.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said she told DeJoy in a phone call that his decision for a temporary pause was “wholly insufficient and does not reverse damage already wreaked.”

The uproar over the Postal Service is expected to spill out Friday as DeJoy testifies before the Senate, and Saturday as the House convenes for a rare session. The House is set to vote on legislation to reverse the service changes and provide $25 billion to shore up operations.

Widespread mail disruptions have stunned Americans and led to warnings that Trump is trying to undermine the Postal Service as he rails against mail-in ballots just as millions of people are trying vote absentee to avoid polling places during the COVID-19 crisis.

Oh - what a lovely Post Service!

I have a suspicion:

Those who praise the US Post Service over the moon here - have never written and posted a letter in their life!:cool:

The price of a stamped letter is low, but those of us who pay net federal taxes are just covering the shortage out of our paychecks. So cost is a mixed bag.

I would love to see a side by side analysis of delivery drivers from USPS and private sector firms. Cost of labor, overhead, average delivery times, benefits package, etc. Only then could a fair analysis be made regarding value.

I know that right now I love my USPS driver - dude would walk uphill both ways in 2 feet of snow to get me my stuff. But that is just anecdotal.

Caveat - we do have a constitutional requirement for the USPS that needs to be met.

Btw: I never criticised the individual postal workers.
I criticise the organization.

It is so good that nobody really paid attention to it until just recently, instead it was reliable enough to take for granted.

What do you mean by good or bad? The fact is it is another government program that flushes money down the toilet. All we are doing is paying good salaries and benefits to people in order to deliver junk mail that no one wants in the first place. How stupid is that? It's just another example of socialism. Now, if you want to make the Post Office a viable entity that can support itself, I'm all for that. But to exist just to suck money up from the government with no real purpose but for socialism is, as I said, stupid. The Post Office is really nothing more than guaranteed government jobs that accomplish nothing at the expense of taxpayers.

For the bosses there, maybe.
But not for the workers.

That's just ridiculous. You can't run an operation with workers only and no bosses. Everyone at the Post Office makes decent money with good benefits, at the expense of taxpayers. Taxpayers are paying them salary and benefits for delivering junk mail that no one wants in the first place. The Post Office has no purpose other than paying people for doing nothing, the liberal Utopia, which is why Democrats are so big on the Post Office.

It's like any other government bureaucracy. The people who work there serve the bureaucracy first. They also deliver the mail, sometimes on time.

As Jerry Seinfeld once quipped, their business model written in 1650 doesn't work as well in the modern age as it used to.

I see ....

You only want to play Trump's trumpet.

I have had multiple bad experiences with the post office.Mostly them delivering packages and other mail to the wrong address blocks away multiple times. First time it happened I thought maybe the mail carrier just made an accidental mistake. But it happened many more times with different mailmen. When I was living at an apartment complex many of my packages and possibly other mail was going to a completely different apartment complex a couple streets over. I would call the post office to file a complaint, they would put me hold while they pretended to get a manager and eventually hang up.So I would have to go there in person. The person at the post office would name off the apartment complex it was delivered to and tell me thats where their GPS shows it being delivered to. I would point out that apartment complex they showed it being delivered to is on 9th street, the address on my shipping receipt says 7th street. So I would have to call the 1-800 number to file a complaint. It was never explained how the mail man can mistake a one street for the other and how it kept repeatedly happening. So far now my mail and packages haven't been going to the wrong address and that's because I ****ing moved. So if given the option of using USPS,Fed-Ex or UPS when ordering something online I will use Fed-ex or UPS.

The post office is constitutionally mandated.

I realize you don't have much use for the constitution, but there it is.

How much detail about it is there in the constitution? Does it provide specifics about how it is to be run? Does it talk about mail in balloting?

The Constitution gives Congress the power to establish a Post Office, but it doesn’t require it.

The USPS should be abolished. They serve no useful purpose, particularly in Alaska where they don't even cover the majority of the State. They don't even issue ZIP Codes, much less deliver mail to more than two-thirds of the State. Every town and village west of Bethel, for example, must share Bethel's ZIP Code and have their mail picked up and delivered by private pilots. UPS, DHL, and FedEx have no problem delivering mail and packages to remote villages, or even delivering to my door, but the USPS won't.

Why are we paying for a government service that isn't being provided?

Well - then the US Post Service is even worse than I thought!
