As much as it stinks to have to stay in Afghanistan, it seems like the reality of that necessity is beginning to possibly sink in in the WH. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned from the Iraq situation.
Politically, it's 1 of 2 things:
-either the WH is truly on board with this 're-thinking'
-or Carter is using his political capital early to push his agenda (after all it would be extremely embarrassing for the admin. to get rid of him after a couple weeks making him the ... 4th? secdef to leave under this admin.)

In his remarks to reporters, Ghani thanked Obama for being flexible and showing a willingness to consider “the realities on the ground.” Using similar phrasing, Carter said that when he returns to Washington he will work up recommendations to Obama, in advance of the March talks, that “reflect reality on the ground.”
