It is now official. Nancy Pelosi is now the Speaker of the House. Now to see if she lives up to the BS...... err, I mean promises, that she made.

Article is here.

She says she's going to be bi-partisan and such about all issues and kept going on about the 100-hours plan in her speech...but this is the American Congress, that WONT last long.

It didn't . Just minutes after posting this thread, I have now posted one about the Democrats evicting Cheney from his office in the Capitol Building.

How is being the first female to do something important? I bet she is the first person to be named Pelosi every to be in the position, so what. Who cares, honestly?

A number of people care, in fact; I among them.

In addition, there is a rule that the headline from the link has to be posted verbatim, so I had no choice. However, I do agree that having the first female Speaker in US History is a momentous event, even if I do not agree completely with her politics.

Why? What does it matter?

If gender "didn't matter", then why has every president, every vice president, and every Speaker of the House in US history been a white male?
Surely you're not implying that it's all just some bizarre coincidence, one which has nothing to do with race or gender, that these scores of white male leaders were simply the most qualified individuals for the job... that there has never before, in the entire history of the world, been a female or a person of color who has been qualified or possessed the necessary attributes to lead?
Your assertion that this historic appointment "doesn't (or shouldn't) matter" implies just that: that gender is not an issue, and therefore that the reason there has never before now been a female President, Vice President, or Speaker has nothing to do with gender discrimination and that by some bizarre coincidence the most qualified candidates for these positions have invariably and exclusively been white and male.
If that is your position, it is a frankly ludicrous one.

Its too bad to see that rather than answer my question about why you think this is important and matters that you instead concern yourself with your wild perceptions on what I think.

If a woman has become the Speaker, then it demonstrates that the system is no longer preventing it. She becoming speaker didn't change the system, she is simply a byproduct of social change, making this event wholly unremarkable. We have this thing in our society where we think, wow she is the first woman speaker, she must be the greatest speaker, or the best, or somehow has been imbued with superhuman characteristic. In fact she may be the worst speaker in the history of the house, maybe she was the best canidate out of the worst congressmen in world (there is a not too far off thought). Since we are agrred that genitals aren’t the determining factor in someone’s competence, why does it matter that she doesn’t have a pair?

It's the beginning of the end. The coming of chaos. It'll enourage terrorists to attack us, American women to turn into welfare queens, and dogs to start living with cats.
