Unless something's changed lately, I remember Quebec drivers putting the pedal to the metal a bit, but they have much better lane discipline than in the states and more eagerly clear the left lane for faster traffic, so they're good by me; I enjoyed driving in rural Quebec! (but they've really got to repair some of those pot-holed roads!)

Or Russia. I've seen the videos, those guys drive like all the traffic laws all the way down to traffic signals... and trivial things like, lane indicators... are all just suggestions.

You cannot determine the quality of a nation's drivers based solely on fatalities.

Two, you cherry picked your list, I note that Russia is almost double the US rate, as is China. And should have mentioned that Libya has a 73.

And here's why we have the worst drivers: speed...and spoiled brats.

When I was living in Manila, the traffic jams there were EPIC. What would take maybe twenty-five minutes without traffic would take two hours with NORMAL traffic...and I was able to measure this at the only time when there was no traffic - there was a Pacquiao fight and nobody, but nobody was on the road.

Thing is, there's hundreds of thousands of cars there...and you're lucky if your average speed going across town is fifteen MPH - and I'm not kidding. But as terrible as the traffic is, while there would be little fender-benders or minor scrapes, serious accidents were very seldom indeed...inside the city. Outside the city's a different matter indeed, but the overwhelming amount of traffic's inside that megalopolis. The speed was much, much slower...and so the accidents were far less serious and rarely required any medical attention.

The other factor was that there - as in most of the world - cars are not seen as toys as they often are here in the States. Here, kids graduating from high school sometimes get ticked off if they don't get a car for a graduation present! But there and in most of the world, a car is seen as a means of livelihood...and more often than not a real privilege, and so one sees far fewer irresponsible teenagers blowing past everybody just because they want to have fun.

Indeed. I think the fact that there are more cars per capita as well as the number of miles driven (increasing the risk) have a strong play in this.

All that being said, I've seen some horrific driving and drivers on the roads, and there is a distinct lack of real drivers 'education' and quality / demands of that 'education' is far short of what it needs to be.

I feel a need to qualify my comments by saying they are wonderful people individually, and out of cars, but any city like my home here in Toronto that has had an influx of Asians, particularly from Hong Kong, South Korea, China, etc., knows that they are by far the worst drivers ever to get behind the wheel of a car. They may be able to do math in their heads, but finding a turn signal or finding the curb lane is like asking them to do brain surgery. Whenever I pass an accident, inevitably at least one car if not both or all cars are either Toyota's, Honda's, Kia's, Hundai's, etc. and driven by drivers dazed by the fact that the car hit something while they were fiddling with their phone or chatting with passengers or gawking at the scenery, or trying to cross three lanes of traffic from the far left lane to an exit they just realized they were going to miss.

Check the traffic statistics in your city. You'll find that the most dangerous intersections are those where a large segment of the population is from some part of Asia and newly arrived. Watch the Asian owned and operated driver training schools and see they train new Asian drivers to keep to the left lane at all times, never signal, and drive dangerously slow while competent drivers are forced to change lanes to get around them all the time not knowing what they may do next.

I've said in the past that I believe it's a conspiracy of the Chinese government to send to Canada the worst drivers in the world so that they will "drive" us bat **** crazy and then take over and fully repopulate this great country.

Wrong metric. Since the US has more drivers, measuring deaths per 100,000 gives a grossly flawed result. Show us deaths per 100,000 miles driven and you're getting closer to the truth.
