I have the same informal policy of preferring to take three rights to avoid a left myself, but it's interesting that UPS has done the math.

I work with UPS drivers regularly and had a conversation about this. They say they've never heard of this policy lol.

It's a conservative plot. I don't think you're allowed to have facial hair if you work for UPS, either. (I remember when Hatteras Yachts told me I'd have to shave my beard before they'd hire me. I advised them they'd have to shave their heads before I'd work for 'em). I haven't noticed the GPS routing me to avoid left turns, but now I'll pay attention to it. Given where I live, there aren't that many options for alternative routes.

That's interesting because it's a reliable link with comments from UPS. I wonder who maps the routed. One would STILL think drivers would notice. I certainly did when my GPS did it a few times.

Somebody needs to figure out once and for all if the globe is turning right or left. We can take our cue from that, and no, nobody from the southern hemisphere has an opinion that counts. Their stars are different, the water goes down the drain the wrong way, and they have the seasons confused. So, if you are hovering over the north pole it appears that the globe is turning to the right. It's settled. Left turns should be illegal because Mother Earth says so. Or, we can put a piece of straw on a watermelon...I love science.

I ride my bike that way all the time. I hate sitting exposed to traffic while waiting to turn left. So, I always do wither a series of rights or ride straight through an intersection, stop and then just cross the street as I would if riding straight.

This makes sense if a driver has to make a lot of stops. If I'm going from point A to Point B I'm making a left turn. If there's nobody around in the middle of the night I'm running the light too.

UPS stayed on after Jarrett retired. He retired in 2008 and UPS stopped in 2014.

Odd you should mention the Southern hemisphere! :shock: My number two daughter is leaving today for Australia, where she will be doing some work for our government for a month as part of her job. I asked her to buy some loose Australian opals while she was there - they're so beautiful and full of flashes of color, quite different from our milky colored ones. She told me she was planning on it before I even mentioned it -smart girl! :thumbs: My parents visited there years ago, and my dad brought some back for me, and I had a ring and earrings made by a local jeweler - gorgeous things! I also requested some refrigerator magnets, since I collect those from places people visit - I've got my own UN going on right here in my own house! :lamo

if the signals in your area are short on left turn arrows, it is good policy.

I plan my town trips to minimize left turns.
