But Zalatix, if you get rid of unpaid internships you'll get rid of a great way to beef up your resume to get a job!

Error!!!

NACE - Class of 2013: Paid Interns Outpace Unpaid Peers in Job Offers, Salaries
Results of NACE’s 2013 Student Survey show that 63.1 percent of paid interns received at least one job offer. In comparison, only 37 percent of unpaid interns got an offer; that’s not much better than results for those with no internship—35.2 percent received at least one job offer.

In other words, if you didn't have an unpaid internship at all and went in without that on your resume, you'd have the same chances of getting a job.

In fact, paid internships have a much better chance of leading to a job!

In terms of starting salary, too, paid interns did significantly better than other job applicants: The median starting salary for new grads with paid internship experience is $51,930—far outdistancing their counterparts with an unpaid internship ($35,721) or no internship experience ($37,087).
And you get paid less when you do get a job after doing unpaid internships.

Why is this?

Simple. Because when employers see that you've been previously willing to work for free, they pay you less.

Unpaid internships will disappear on their own when no one wants to apply for them. But if people want to enroll in an unpaid internship, why shouldn't they have the opportunity?

I am sure someone said that about drug tests. But now those things are the norm in many companies. Because there is a enough desperate people out there who will do the unpaid internships that will screw over everyone else.

You didn't think that through very well. If unpaid internships don't do anything for people who sign up for them, then why would they be desperate to sign up? HINT: It's not for the pay.

Because there are enough of those who take the unpaid internships that will screw over those who won't do unpaid internships. Its like drug tests. When some companies first started doing them, most people just said just don't work for a company that does drug tests. Now there is very few companies who won't randomly piss test their employees.

Because they believe that they need it in order to get a job in the future. When in fact you don't need a unpaid internship to get a job.

unpaid internships have gone from something to do in college to get a foot in the door to free labor which will get you exactly jack ****. interns should get at least minimum wage if they are doing work.

Careful, a socialist doesn't like a suggestion that the marketplace can take care of itself.

I'm with you. I think it's exploitation. There are some here (I've argued this before) who see unpaid internships as opportunities to learn and get experience one wouldn't otherwise have. I disagree. The "rules" of an unpaid internship mean you can't do any real work. And we know that rule is exploited.

Minimum wage at least.

Word gets around. If unpaid internships don't help, it won't be a secret. People talk. They should be able to make up their own minds instead of having choices made for them.

More "protect us from ourselves" crap. If someone wants to volunteer for an unpaid internship position, I say let them.

I disagree with you.

The reason why people do unpaid internships is so they can get experience in that career field without the company paying for it.

Whenever a business takes on an a person they have to pay, it's a risk for them. And since they are only interns that business has no idea if that person without any job experience at all will work out. And that affects the productivity of the business which also affects the profitability of that business.

And your article is under question.

Yes, paid internships have a higher chance of providing job offers and better salary.

But that could be more because the career fields that provide paid internships are more technical and require more of an education, and so are likely to be more productive despite being an intern.

So an intern studying medicine will be - and should be - treated differently than an intern in the culinary field or radio broadcasting.

And yet Washington, DC is going to force WalMart to hire those same people for $12.50 an hour -- the new minimum wage....for them.

Washington DC is requiring Walmart to pay Walmart interns $12.50 an hour?

No, WalMart wouldn't be allowed to have interns. They've got to take those raw recruits and pay them $12.50 an hour.

Yeah, because being a sales associate at Walmart doesn't require a college degree or trade certifications. Which makes sense. It's not a major career field.

But interns in other career fields can benefit from an internship, even if they don't get paid but so they can learn the ropes of an industry.

And if you abolish unpaid internships, that won't force businesses to pay interns. Rather, it will force businesses to refuse to take interns at all. Which will make it even more difficult for those seeking a major career from getting early experience.

Never happen. It's a republican wet dream... the only slavery allowed by law.

It's called a scam. Uninformed young people fall for scams all the time.

What you're saying is that Yankee Caveat Emptor Capitalism is alive and well.

True, considering most unpaid internships don't even lead to jobs, and people who get into unpaid internships earn less during their lifetime.

In case you missed the clue - unpaid interns are being lied to.

Word got around about those Nigerian scams. People still fall for them.

Apprenticeships are ages old. If you don't think the training and experience e are worth your efforts, don't do it. It is your career and your resume you have to think about. I just think it is ignorant to make choices for other people. But I realize liberals are more than happy to make those choices for people because liberals always know what's best for everyone else.

Funny thing about liberals and choice. They wouldn't let someone choose to work without pay for the experience but they would support their choice to have an abortion for free. I guess it's just a better experience.

Except your article is misleading because it considers all careers as being equal.

Show me a breakdown of which career fields with paid internships lead to job opportunities and which don't, and then we can discuss this issue in greater depth and detail.

But one thing you can't do is consider all career fields as equal in regards to this issue.

First and foremost, internships are NOT apprenticeships. I can't even believe you tried to post that, thinking someone wouldn't call you on it. Second of all, choices require informed consent. This is why fraud is illegal. Unpaid internships are a huge scam operation.

You want to live in a country where people are free to screw each other than America will never be your country. I don't even know why you bother to tilt against that windmill.

Never had, been or wanted an internship but I assume the value is in who you get to know.

As for the reasoning that you make more without internships, I'll use that same reasoning as follows:

I was incredibly bored by school. The tried skipping grades but all that did was make me the object of negative attention from everyone bigger than me. And I'm a pretty small guy anyway.

So, I never finished High School. I ran away from home and went to live in New York City. I had fake ID and this is the era long before even fax machines. I left the US when I was 20 and worked ovverseas for 6/7 years and then started a business in Korea and went on to have 3 successful businesses and 2 failures. The successes were greater than the failures so I'm now happily retired, have been able to be charitable, took care of my family and helped my friends.

So, I will suggest that you skip school. After all, by the time you finish High School you cou;ld already have 3 years of actual experience that you can trade up later in your life.

Does anyone agree? Probably not. Would I take an internship if I were just starting out? You betcha. I'd pay them if I had to. I've seen the value of connections even though I've had very few. Priceless. I won't bore you with the story.

And what businesses did you run? This is highly important considering the nature of America's economy.

Of course, they're not apprenticeships but he principle Of trading work for experience is the foundation of both. ID have thought reasonably intelligent people would understand the comparison for that reason. The rest of your vitriolic hyperbole was too senseless to warrant a reply
