UnitedHealth, the nation's biggest health insurer, will remain in public health insurance exchanges in only a handful of states next year after expanding to 34 this year.

CEO Stephen Hemsley told analysts Tuesday morning that the company cannot continue to broadly serve the market created by the Affordable Care Act's coverage expansion due in part to the higher risk that comes with its customers.

The state-based exchanges are a key element behind the Affordable Care Act's push to expand insurance coverage. But insurers have struggled with higher than expected claims from that business.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. has estimated that it could lose as much as $475 million on its public exchange business this year. It has already decided to pull out of Arkansas, Georgia and Michigan in 2017.

Just like Fidel Obama intended. Bankrupt the insurance industry, then give the United States government control of 1/6th of the economy in perpetuity.

Fortunately, for those that can afford it, many doctors are leaving the system altogether and setting up exclusive private group practices. That's what we did, and it's working very well. My doctor serves about 100 families, and we all pay 5,000 per year. We get 24/7 access to him (and his network of specialists), and we all get to be free and clear of Obamacare.

cash is king. that is how it should be setup. that is about 416 a month which isn't bad for full access for an entire family.

we all knew from the start that obamacare wasn't about expanding health insurance.

Wait! What? The exchanges aren't working very well at all? Who'd have thunk it?

Then you were just as wrong then as you are now.

nope I was right and the insurance companies finally figured it out as well that is why they are pulling out
of the market.

everyone that had any lick of logic or commonsense.

I know that I totally didn't see this coming at all. It wasn't like it was obvious from the start that it was planned to fail or anything.

No, just people who were satisfied with the racquet the insurance industry was. The issue has never been that insurance industry hast to assume some risk, which is what they've always been paid to do and should have been doing from the start. The problem is that prices in terms of pharmaceuticals and medical devices go largely unchecked.

I have zero sympathy for these companies. It cost you money? Good. You made the bed - lay in it.

Well dang. That leaves some posters here out of the above category. It's such a shame. Here they had all these high hopes and now they're dashed on the rocks of reality. Sumbitch. I hate it when that happens. Of course, when that happens time after time after time, one is more disposed to categorizing such people as assholes pushing a dishonest agenda.

Next stop: Single payer universal healthcare.

Not for me!

You guys can share the C-student doctors at the community clinic. I'm in a private share outside the system where the real doctors are flocking to.

Medical aristocracy.

I don't sympathize with insurance companies whatsoever. They gladly took the free money early on, and now they're bailing.

This system needs fixing, but the government is the last agent on the planet that can fix anything.

Funny, because I am pretty certain things got worse every time the government stepped in to try and run/manage pieces of the insurance industry. Things were far better before the government started trying to get companies to set up HMO's etc...

Heaven no. It was all about providing health insurance to those who didn't have it. Who doesn't want that? It's possible to shame an entire nation by trotting out one person in a wheel chair with a pre-existing condition that can't get health insurance. There are some here that will defend the result on that basis.

Fine with me. There willl always be a market for premium private company services for those who can afford it. And those private health insurance companies will improve in quality knowing that if they piss you off sufficiently you'll always just throw up your hands and say "Screw it, I'm going with UHC."

They may lose money but can still find 66 million to pay their CEO so yeah I guess they can afford it.

The government could care less whether you live or die. In fact, they'd prefer you just go ahead and die.

This is about votes and redistribution of wealth. Nothing more. Healthcare is just a conduit.

None of your invective changes anything.

Obamacare was designed to fail.

It's just invective, nothing more.

Then what was "if you like your healthcare plan, you'll be able to keep your healthcare plan"?

Was that invective, too?

No, that's a "non sequitur" on your part. Apparently you just want to use this thread as a platform to bitch. Carry on.
