Who agrees that there should be a United Earth Government? All existing nation-states would already exist, but they would be federalized into less-powerful states (similar to US states). It wouldn't be some stupid New World Order conspiracy theory or anything like that, since that is just a hoax, but this would be a real legitimate peaceful and democratic world government. I think it would be a good thing. Of course, the US would probably still be the leader of the world. This new world government would of course be capitalist and democratic and have human rights and a constitution similar to the United States constitution. It would further development worldwide. It would sort of be like the United Earth in Star Trek I suppose, what do you think, would you like there to be a world government?

You had me at "Star Trek."

You have to think bigger. The Culture is already out there, and it's socialist!

Wiki.

"The Culture is characterized by being a post-scarcity society (meaning that its advanced technologies provide practically limitless material wealth and comforts for everyone for free, having all but abolished the concept of possessions), by having overcome almost all physical constraints on life (including disease and death) and by being an almost totally egalitarian, stable society without the use of any form of force or compulsion, except where necessary to protect others.
Minds, powerful artificial intelligences, have an important role to play in this society. They administer this affluence for the benefit of all. As one commentator has said,
"In vesting all power in his individualistic, sometime eccentric, but always benign, AI Minds, Banks knew what he was doing; this is the only way a liberal anarchy could be achieved, by taking what is best in humans and placing it beyond corruption, which means out of human control. The danger involved in this imaginative step, though, is clear; one of the problems with the Culture novels as novels is that the central characters, the Minds, are too powerful and, to put it bluntly, too good."[3]
The novels of the Culture cycle, therefore, mostly deal with people at the fringes of the Culture–diplomats, spies or mercenaries–those who interact with other civilizations, and who do the Culture's dirty work in moving those societies closer to the Culture ideal, sometimes by force..."

We aren't anywhere near being ready for anything like this. There remain too many nations that are tyrannical, oppressive, primitive, and in many cases impoverished because of their culture or their government. Federating with them means giving them power over us to some degree, because they get to vote too.

No thanks.

I like my country's sovereignty so I voted no.Besides that it would require taxing the **** out of more well off nations on welfare, repair infrastructure and so on.

Hehe. I saw this thread in the front page and misread jamesrage as james t kirk. I was thinking that someone was trolling.

The last thing I would ever want is world peace.

No, anything that big would have to be totalitarian or it wouldn't work, and I don't like totalitarian.

Only if we can have space ships.

Only if we can have space ships.

This goes along the lines with my views. Single world governments probably wont be so bad if we have space travel and viable self supporting colonies.

So that if you don't like the government on this planet, you've got somewhere else to go. :)

I always have liked the idea but I don't think it'll be happening anytime soon.

If we could do it Star Trek style, then sure. Although I think San Fransisco is a lame place to have the headquarters of Starfleet.

In reality though, I could never trust such an institution. On the national level, governments are dubious enough. There would be no real way to give individuals a say in a suprainternational government. It would be operating on too grand a scale.

What I would like to see more of is mutual co-operation to the point where individual nations still exist but they are neutered by complex interdependence. And by that I don't mean the current style of globalization. Right now people are not mobile, only companies are, and mostly western companies.

As Frank Barone of Everybody Loves Raymond once said, "What are you, living in fairyland?"

LOL! You had me right up until this bit - "Of course, the US would probably still be the leader of the world. This new world government would of course be capitalist and democratic and have human rights and a constitution similar to the United States constitution."

Have you any concept of what a great idea the rest of the civilised world would think that is?

No man, clearly a country with 5% of the population would call all of the shots!!

I think if the world was every United under the same flag, we would still have wars, but they would be called Civil War. For all intense and purposes, the US is the leader of the world. We have the United Nations located on US soil, in New York. We protect our allies, send troops and aid where they are needed. We refer to other countries as "States," especially when they are countries we disagree with. "Rogue States" as an example.

I don't see what adding One World flag to the picture would do. People would still fight and kill each other. Human beings will never be at peace with themselves. But despite all this, I voted yes. It's worth a try.

The closer this Nation gets to a one World Government the closer we get to Socialism or one of the spin offs that all spill disaster for the world economies.

It is essential that capitalism rule the day because without those who have and those who want to have there is no incentive to work hard and improve do better etc.

It becomes the race to the bottom Obama envisions with his Black Liberation Theology/Marxism.

There can never be a civilization where everyone is equal because everyone would be poor except those who are in control and that leads to dictatorship.

We have a Constitution that I took an oath to preserve protect and defend, form all enemies both foreign and domestic, and plane to live up to that oath.

It's way I oppose and expose the Anti-American Obama and his entire administration.

you sir just made me experience a revelation :O

the world is really becoming smaller and more and more at peace. with the advancement of technology, espianoge and greater respect for human life, war has historically shrunk. think of the epic bloody battles that took place in the middle ages, then think of WW1 and WW2, now today. war is becoming smaller all the time, and more diplomatic, more regulated, massive ground assaults like at Normandy havent happened since the WW2 and probly never will again. i believe that someday war WILL become obsolite.

the thought that if there ever was a world government and that all war would become 'civil war' is interesting because it shows that armed conflict is coming to an end, the world is becoming less divided. tolerance and unity is on the rise, countries and the people in them are becoming closer.

The world is on the verge of civilizational collapse and the misery to come is going to outstrip any past dark age. The keepers of civilization have grown stupid and timid while the forces of barbarism grow stronger. It was always inevitable; I had simply hoped I wouldn't live to see it. I may.

The only thing which has kept war smaller and more contained since WWII is the threat of nuclear annihilation if things got too out hand. That threat is receding and is being replaced with tiny nuclear powers who can't threaten total destruction and thus do not deter war, and paradoxically make small-scale nuclear holocausts far more likely. Wars will gradually get bigger and bigger and may well be peppered with mushroom clouds. And as long as total destruction isn't a real threat, it will be tolerated.

So, sorry to rain on a utopian parade, but human nature doesn't change and history is far from finished.

Oh, and happy holidays!

See, this is why I always feel bad about threads like this. Someone always thinks this is actually happening. :(
