Interesting stat is that 6% of all US corn is consumed by making only sweeteners, corn syrup. That's a lot. And, it goes into other high-margin, low-nutrition products like cookies and soda.

It would not surprise me to see that well over 25% of all food stuff grown is consumed by producing junk foods.
And they still pay farmers not to grow food as well as dump cargo ships full of grain into the sea rather than lessen the commodity price.

Hello soylentgreen, I liked your comments. Could I add to them?

There are other reasons for famine, natural disasters like drought, political reasons like North Korean sanctions, and logisticals of getting food to those in need. Mental health issues with homelessness and poverty.

It seems as if this subject keeps growing faster with problems, then solutions. There are good humans working on it. Could we do more to help those trying to tackle these enormous issues with famine and distribution of healthy food to those in need? I hope so......

Thanks for letting me butt into your conversation.
Those are the cause of famine. They are not what keeps a famine going. Having the charitable grain sent to a country only to be stolen and sold on the open markets is what keeps a famine going.

No, a lot more a starving because there are middle men whose only concern is the profit and no concern for feeding people. Again, the only reason we have famine in todays world is because there is no profit to be made feeding the poor.

You are mistaking capitalism for laissez faire capitalism under which most of our food is captured by large corporations whose concern is profit rather than feeding people. Had we a system where capitalism was the philosophy of the middle men then they would have a concern about feeding people because that is how capitalism works by meeting the needs of the consumer. Where as laissez faire only concern is to the profit line.
Capitalism does meet the need of a consumer uNless the consumer pays the going rate by definition.

True! You have uncovered the real issue. Any quick solutions for that problem.

The world is full of bullies. How does a human stop the bullies?

Capitalism does and it is a very old philosophy. However laissez faire capitalism does not. And multi national corporations are a laissez faire capitalism. There only intention is to make profit.

I wasn't aware of a nonprofit capitalism.

I would suggest a stronger socialist government.
I see.

The government sticks up for the people. In a strong socialist economy. (Is that like a mother or father sticking up to the bully for a child?)

Are there any real world examples, in place, to compare ourselves too. What’s the turn around time? For a government to change into a strong socialist economy. Is there a negative side to socialism? Many people comment on how socialism kills many people each year, take North Korea, for example:

Just out of curiosity.
North Korea... for most Americans, this is a country-a joke, an enemy, a horror story, etc.
I think many of you are well aware that North Korea periodically experiences famine in the mass sense... thanks to the Western world, sanctions and the blockade.
Most of the people living there are no more than hostages of the situation, they did not choose such a life path and cannot change the current situation. Dissidents in Korea do not live long, by the way, their relatives do too.
Only now there is a dumb question-and for what is it to them? All this blockade and endless suffering? Is Kim malnourished by the blockade? No, a very plump face.
But at the same time, all Americans are happy to support the persecution of this people.
Do you believe this quote? from a North Korean, Fubiusbile.

Our Republic-democracy government has sanctions on this country, people are in a famine. Capitalism is not to blame. A totalitarian leader is to blame. A leader who is a bully. Not even a government can stop a bully. Bullies control, use, hide in government power. The Korean people must find a way, to overcome this leader. Many countries have gained independence by revolutionary tactics. America did!!

No, I would have said run to your mummy if that was what I had meant. But I understand, you're an american and have been bred to fear government. So of course you would look at it as if it was a separate identity rather than the will of the people.

I knew that if I just left it at mentioning the word socialism then I am more than likely to be seeing a response such as yours. The ignorance is typical. Please take a look at a map or even your own quote, and you will see that n korea is a democratic republic just like america calls itself. North korea is not a socialist country, it is a dictatorship. You do not undersdtand socialism beyond the hate filled propaganda americans bathe themselves in.
The better explanation is that in order to fight the powerdul corporates the people need a strong voice which can only be achieved by a government that gives support to the people before the profit making of corporates. which is another thing your government and n korea have in common. They would rather support the one who gives the politicians more power.

You are correct that the US caters to corporations. It’s that whole capitalism economy /taxes thing..... we do have socialist programs in our government. Come over some time to see them in action.

I guess comparing the US to NK is a fair comparison.....we both have humans staving in the streets, we both have nuclear weapons, we both have government controlled businesses? The last one isn’t correct, well maybe....the post office is government controlled.

Then there’s the people who vote for other people to represent them. Yes! We constantly vote a different person in offices all the time. Does NK? The leader is on his 10th year.

The law, has its flaws in the US, NK probably is more strict, since we have freedom of speech.

I am pretty ignorant, I like to be seen as not intelligent, then no one thinks I am a threat. I walk were I want on the political spectrum, with no fear of the government. I hold no opinion as guaranteed. It frees my soul to be whatever I choose to be, to be happy. I cannot control any government, nor will I. I can only survive by not letting the bullies keep me down. I do a good job. For such an ignorant human being.

Thank you for pointing out my flaws in my existence. It is refreshing😁 You have enlightened me with many facts you have stated. Keep up your fight. The victory is so close......please send a letter when you have achieved your goal with changing all governments. Are you a coalition of one? Or many??Bullies.

You made a statement that can only be you making an inference because nothing I said implied as such. If that is what you think then that shows a lack of understanding about capitalism. Where as I have not said anything so unenlightened about capitalism , you on the other hand just did.

It’s funny how the things people describe as good ways to fix problems don’t exist. No one has given any real world examples, just words of hope! The word “Capitalism”!! But only this kind of capitalism. “Socialism” only this kind of socialism.

Countries have tried both. Both seem to work, till someone corrupts things. Gives them a bad name. America is so gigantic!! We have capitalism that works and capitalism that doesn’t, we have some socialism that works some has not. When things aren’t working, we find out why? It’s the humans in charge, who are corrupting things!! Corruption is good for the corrupt individuals, not good for those who have no power. Yes! Giving some power to the individuals is the key, evening this system out. This is very hard when elected officials only hear (listen) from the Capitalist corporations. Is it time for elected officials to feel the heat of the people, from all side of the political spectrum.

After reading all the posts again (loving my ignorance). It makes more sense to me now. Thank you for enlightening me further in life......

Your ancestors made a mistake in having a revolution. Not only with hind site did it prove to be unnecessary but it instigated what can only be described as a failure of a system of governance.

Has anyone ever collected data on how much money is sent or spent to "feed the hungry" and then follow the money to where it actually goes?

I wonder for instance if we spent/send enough to feed the hungry world but due to corrupt governments/aid it ain't getting there?

I can only believe that statement from someone who is from the losing side of that revolution.

Life happens! If there is regret, time to look within to resolve it.

I could agree with you so you could find happiness......I am not a people pleaser, I am not responsible for others happiness but my own. I like to help those who need it most. Those who hold no blame for me, in my existence. We can exist. Be kind to one another. All it takes is......for someone to be that person on the inside.

Happy trails!!!! America is what it is, till it changes. Kinda like human beings. Do you want to change?

Pardon my multiple replies, are you speaking from personal experience of failed governance? Or just giving a distant opinion?

In what way would you argue a country that can elect trump for president has a system of governance that works?

Obesity is driven more by what you eat rather than how much you eat. Fat (fast) food is much cheaper calorie for calorie than 'nutritious' food, and comes in prepared excessively generous portions.
A whole roasted chicken costs $5 at Costco. That and about $2.75 worth of carbs and vegetables is enough for at least 4 meals.

This country is free to vote for anyone, Trump lead us on a path. A path we must now confront.

America is in an identity crisis......a civil war seems more prevalent then compromise. America has many flaws and issues, that some citizens don’t want to address. Unfortunately other citizens want to address those issues. Can we have a conversation to resolve those issues? Only time will tell, I am hopeful!

Much like yourself, you are willing to address issues. Can we come to an agreement? To head in a direction. We are all to blame if we do nothing. As painful as issues are, it’s more painful to watch people suffer, from a lack of response.

Citizens have responded to Trump. He has ignited the spark of change......what that change will be, not sure!?!

I appreciate your opinion of the US. It’s good to hear others opinions. For we are, sometimes to close to the real issues. Thank you.

It is difficult to impossible to engage in conversation with someone who wont stop yelling. You can keep talking but you end up talking to yourself.
