At independence in 1991, Ukraine had to decide on a new national flag. They settled on a flag with two equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow.

The blue represents the azure sky, and the gold represents the golden wheat and sunflower fields of Ukraine. Anyone who has been to Ukraine appreciates the symbolism.

It's actually a return to the 1917 flag of the Ukrainian People's Republic. Ukraine actually had a bunch of different flags during the Soviet era

That is not the flag of the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics. :)

The 1917 flag.

Ignore the map. That's territory claimed by the 1917-21 Republic, not territory actually controlled.

You just love to argue. The point I was trying to make is that no one living could remember seeing the blue and yellow bicolor fly.

Christ on a cracker.
