This has the very real potential for ballooning into Trump's first bona-fide international crisis.

How many people here trust Trump to handle this calmly, without bias and with full consideration of the needs of our European allies?

Russia knows that the President of the United States is weak and compromised. Thus they have a very good chance of getting away with this.

Oh please, he's very calm at foreign policy. He'll just let Putin take Ukraine by force.

"Maybe it's Russia's fault, maybe it's Ukraine's fault. Who knows? Putin denies he started it. What do you want me to do? Go over there and start WWIII?"

The response is so predictable it's depressing.

Lets be real, Trump is not going to do a damn thing about this aggression from Russia, nor will he condemn Putin's actions.

No, he'll just suck Putin's dick and blame the Democrats.

Eric Trump: “we have all the funding we need out of russia!”

Did he seriously say that?? Or are you just parodying the Dumbass-in-Chief?

I'm making an extremely safe prediction of his response.

Twitter isn't a media source.

What do you think he should do?

Why should I believe what Kiev says? This certainly happened, but it might have been avoided if Kiev had followed the rules set by the Russians. Likely, Kiev was deliberately provoking Russia, hoping their American overlords would step in to defend them.

What were Russia's rules?

What do you think he should do?

Sanctions have been our primary tool for setting punishments that don't result in World War III. See: Magnitsky Act.

That'll be useless. We should let Russia know that if they don't back down, we'll respond with force.

Waiting to hear Trump get tough with Russia.

Will he actually take a principled stand?

Or will it be like the other times, when the state department or Congress take tough-ish measures, and Trump fumes about it because he didn't want it, and then after the fact he takes credit when he needs cover for his Putin-fluffing actions?

Or will nothing happen at all and we don't even make a whimper about Russia's encroachment on Ukraine's sovereignty?

The Magnitsky Act was effective enough that it caused Putin to repeatedly engage the Trump campaign to remove the sanctions. The sanction has resulted in the freezing of countless millions of dollars in Russian in assets in Western banks. .

The use of force was more or less the opening scene of The Day After.

I suspect they might like that. Instead of just one ship like the Donald Cook, they might get an opportunity to punish several ships.

Or, they'll get punished.
