Ukraine on Monday rejected an ultimatum to surrender the besieged city of Mariupol, its deputy prime minister told local media, demanding Moscow instead allow hundreds of thousands of terrified residents safe passage out. "We can't talk about surrendering weapons," Iryna Vereshchuk told Ukrainska Pravda hours before a Russian deadline. "We have already informed the Russian side about it," she said, demanding Moscow instead open humanitarian corridors to allow an estimated 350,000 people still trapped in the city to leave. Russia's Ministry of Defense had earlier said Ukraine had until 5am on March 21 to respond to Russian proposals, warning that more than a "court martial" awaits those who do not surrender. "We call on units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, territorial defense battalions, foreign mercenaries to stop hostilities, lay down their arms" said the head of the Russian National Defense Control Center Mikhail Mizintsev.

The southern port city of Mariupol is a pivotal target in Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine — providing a land bridge between Russian forces in Crimea to the southwest and Russian-controled territory to the north and east. The city has been under heavy bombardment from surrounding Russian forces since the start of the invasion on Feb. 24. A Greek diplomat who remained in Mariupol during some of the bombardment said the destruction there would rank alongside history's most ruinous wartime assaults. "Mariupol will be included in a list of cities in the world that were completely destroyed by the war, such as Guernica, Stalingrad, Grozny, Aleppo," Manolis Androulakis said after flying back to Athens.

It sounds like the Russians are threatening to execute caprured Ukrainian military POW's.

The Ukraine government is sending 100 buses from Zaporizhzhia to Mariupol to evacuate civilians today. Will the Russians bomb this humanitarian convoy?

Meanwhile, in the last 48 hours, Zelensky has banned political opposition to his regime and banned the free press. His regime will now be the sole source of news and information in Ukraine.

Now Putin can say that because Zelensky refused the offer of surrender, it's Z's fault when Putin kills every man, woman and child in Mariupol.

If you think that's bad you won't believe what we did during WWII when we didn't even have any foreign troops on our soil.

Zelenskyy banned pro-Russia political parties in Ukraine long known for taking their marching orders from the Kremlin. A fifth column.

Hell, Putin is even godfather to Medvedchuk's daughter Daryna.

Allegedly. Even if we believe the propaganda that everyone who isn’t Zelensky is a Russian collaborator - are we just supposed to forget about the fact that these people were democratically elected? And what of the free press? Ukraine is now a dictatorship and history tells us that such power isn’t relinquished voluntarily.

Neither Roosevelt or Truman banned the opposing political party or eliminated the free press. The United States didn’t call off democracy during WWII.

The Office of Censorship was an emergency wartime agency set up by the United States federal government on December 19, 1941 to aid in the censorship of all communications coming into and going out of the United States, including its territories and the Philippines. (Source)
The government was worried that people on the Home Front might grow disillusioned with the war, and that this could lead to defeat. For this reason, local officials used censorship and propaganda to maintain morale of citizens during the war. It was felt that keeping secret certain details which might cause people to lose hope would be best for the morale of the country. (Source)
Not WWII but...
Congress passed the Communist Control Act in August 1954. The act declared that, “The Communist Party of the United States, though purportedly a political party, is in fact an instrumentality of a conspiracy to overthrow the Government of the United States.” (Source)

But during WWII our treatment of the Japanese people was far worse than suspending political parties.
In the United States during World War II, about 120,000[5] people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in the western interior of the country.
According to a 1943 War Relocation Authority report, internees were housed in "tar paper-covered barracks of simple frame construction without plumbing or cooking facilities of any kind". The spartan facilities met international laws, but left much to be desired....Throughout many camps, twenty-five people were forced to live in space built to contain four, leaving no room for privacy.
There are documented instances of guards shooting internees who reportedly attempted to walk outside the fences.

His post was intended to dirty up Ukraine.

But never a word from Napoleon about Putin smashing all political opposition in Russia and criminalizing independent media..

Lol true. Yeah just pointing at what Russia is doing right now would have been way better. Russia is literally going full 1984 right now.

You’re welcome to criticize Putin for that, but you can no longer pretend that Zelensky is any better now that he’s cancelled Democracy in Ukraine.

No not allegedly. I posted the relevant article in this forum a few days ago.
Yes, allegedly. The Zelensky regime has placed him under house arrest for over a year without trial. If it’s more than just innuendo and rumor then why has there been no criminal trial?

Zelensky is as bad as Putin because he temporarily, while being invaded, shut down 5th column activity?

You really are pro-Russia/Putin.

You’re really lapping up the propaganda if you believe that everyone who isn’t Zelensky must be a Russian collaborator in the war. These representatives were democratically elected by the people of Ukraine. Nobody voted for Zelensky to cancel Democracy and seize power for himself. He’s done more to destroy Ukranian democracy in the last 48 hours than Putin has managed to accomplish in 4 weeks of war.

You, not everyone.
And it was your own posts.

It's war time, he's being invaded injustily by Russia. Why are you so appalled at a minor war-time measure and not Russia/Putin's invasion of Ukraine killing civilians, etc.? Your arguments are lost in a sea of absurdity of your own making.

Your response is disingenuous at best. Your head would rocket off your shoulders if an American President announced that all political opposition is banned and all press will be consolidated into a single nationalized source of news and information to be decided by the Administration. Cancelling democracy is not a minor thing.

I see you can't denounce Russia/Putin and can't determine the relative "wrongness" of PUtin invading and killing civilians, and Zelensky making a termporary war-time call to help shut down the 5th column.

Everyone can see it.

This isn’t about me. What this demonstrates is there are no guiding principles behind your criticisms of Putin. If there were you’d be willing to level those same criticisms against Zelensky. Cancelling democracy is not a minor thing. We have never done that. Not even when the British marched into DC and burned down the White House.
