Russia and Ukraine blamed each other in the dispute that further ratcheted up tensions ever since Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014 and threw its weight behind separatists in eastern Ukraine with clandestine support, including troops and weapons.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko asked lawmakers in Kiev to institute martial law, something the country has not done even during the worst of the fighting in the east that killed about 10,000 people.

After a five-hour debate, parliament overwhelmingly approved his proposal, voting to impose martial law for 30 days.
So this is the first time ever ML was declared, even though both countries have been in a de facto state of war for years.

Very suspicious since Poroshenko is not popular in the country and faces an election, so it may even be said that he ordered his navy to provoke the Russians in order to give him an excuse to shore up his political strength...

I hope the West uses their brains and stays out of it, its clear Proshenko is trying to start a conflict and wants the West to bail him out.

When one downs a civilian airliner wether asked to by Obama or not, that makes you a bad guy. ( see MSM reaction by US Navy of Iranian commercial passanger airliner )

When one is facing an election in a few months with 8% support, martial law comes in very handy in suppressing opposition and giving the possibility of postponing the election.

Unless further Russian aggression/piracy transpires, the martial law decree will expire on December 26. It is only declared for the 10 oblasts [regions] either bordering Russia or the coastlines of Ukraine. ML here only places the UA military forces in these regions on full alert. The 2019 Ukraine elections will take place on March 31.

Thanks for your conspiracy theory though.

You may believe that the Ukrainians are innocent angels being chased by Russian devils, but the fact that this happened at so close to the Ukrainian election and with their president being so unpopular in the polls is nothing short of suspicious.

Even more suspicious is Putin opening fire on Ukrainian vessels that have every right of passage, and thus playing completely into the supposed Poroshenko plot.

Suspicious in the manner that this can hardly have been the plan and would appear to signify that Vlad has lost it completely where sense of reality is concerned.

Unless, of course, the plan is to push the envelope to the point of fabricating an excuse for invading Ukraine altogether.

Has Poroshenko sent any telegram of appreciation to Moscow yet?

Why would Putin force a military escalation when he isnt running for reelection yet? The one in political trouble is Poroshenko.

Didn't I ask exactly that?

And didn't I suggest a possible explanation?

Strangely enough, the oblasts under martial law correlate rather closely to the regions with the highest proportion of people likely to be sympathetic to the more pro Russsinpab oriented opposition.

It's a bit like Trump putting the east and west coasts under martial law and then arguing that the Midwest and South are free so let's just move on quietly.

Didn't I ask exactly that?

And didn't I suggest a possible explanation?

So Putin's gone mad? That's your explanation?

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said the clash between Russian and Ukrainian military ships was a result of foreign nation’s failing to hold Kiev accountable for bad behavior as long as it remains confrontational towards Russia. The remarks were the first made by the Russian leader since the confrontation in the Kerch Strait, a narrow passageway between the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, where a strategic bridge connecting Crimea with mainland Russia is located.

“The authorities in Kiev are selling anti-Russian sentiment with quite a success today. They have nothing else to do,” Putin said during a business forum in Moscow.

The Russian president said it seemed like Kiev could get away with anything as far as foreign nations supporting Ukraine’s anti-Russian stance were concerned.

'If they demand babies for breakfast, they would probably be served babies. They’d say: ‘Why not, they are hungry, what is to be done about it?’ This is such a shortsighted policy and it cannot have a good outcome. It makes the Ukrainian leadership complacent, gives them no incentive to do normal political work in their country or pursue a normal economic policy.'

Putin said the incident, which ended in Russia’s seizure of three Ukrainian ships and Kiev imposing a partial martial law in the country, was a “dirty game” by Poroshenko, who needs to suppress his political opponents ahead of the March presidential election. He assured that the Ukrainian side was responsible for the escalation of tensions, since the incident was a deliberate and planned provocation by the Ukrainian Navy.

The US - still happy to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian.

the gall, oh the gall. :lamo

So Putin's gone mad? That's your explanation?
By what I address in post #15, one could almost think so, but if you read back to post #7, that wasn't my original suggestion.

What you misrepresent (as is no doubt your usual desire) is that the people in those Oblasts that border the Donbass hold no sympathy for Russia at all.

What you also misrepresent is that martial law is in effect also on the Ukrainian Black Sea and Asov Sea coasts, as well as Transnistria. IOW everwhere one might expect a Russian attack, should it occur.
It's a bit like Trump putting the east and west coasts under martial law and then arguing that the Midwest and South are free so let's just move on quietly.
An asinine attempt at creating equivalence.

What difference does that make? Putin's position is secure. Poroshenko's isnt.
The difference lies in any Russian election not having a hope in hell of dethroning Putin, seeing how the Kremlin has always made sure of that by neutralising any potential contender.

That Kiev has followed a similar tradition in the past (Yanukovich-Tymoshenko) takes nothing from that. Quite apart that it didn't work there in the long run.

A convoluted admission that Russia doesn't need to stage provocations to boost Putin's populairty because it's all fixed ........ right?

Heck - he's never even going to face an election again - but that doesn't seem to figure in any of your analysis.

Was any Soviet invasion related to upcoming elections?

Your point is what exactly? Youre make normally pretty good points when you dont speak in riddles, you know.

And Crimea belongs to Russia now, so what? If the Russians will do something it will be big.

The difference here is that I know what I'm taking about and you obviously don't.

The Black Sea coast regions around Odessa - you remember when Nazis burned ethnic Russians alive and Kiev stood by and watched?

Just acquaint yourself with a reality map before coming g out with your nonsense.

PS Transnistria is not in Ukraine any more than other states which border it are.
