LVIV: Air raid sirens blared across most Ukrainian cities on Saturday (Mar 12) morning urging people to seek shelters, local media reported, after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the war had reached a "strategic turning point". Russian forces appeared to be regrouping, possibly for a fresh offensive which could target the capital Kyiv, Ukraine's military and Britian's defence ministry said. Russian forces kept up their bombardment of cities across the country on Friday in the biggest assault on a European country since World War Two. Satellite images showed them firing artillery as they advanced on Kyiv. The fighting has created more than 2 million refugees, and thousands of Ukrainians are trapped in besieged cities. Putin calls the invasion a "special operation" to disarm Ukraine and unseat leaders it calls neo-Nazis. Ukraine and Western allies call this a baseless pretext for a war of choice.

The governor of the Kharkiv region on the Russian border, said a psychiatric hospital had been hit, and the mayor of the city of Kharkiv said about 50 schools there had been destroyed. In the besieged southern city of Mariupol, the city council said at least 1,582 civilians had been killed by Russian shelling and a 12-day blockade that has left hundreds of thousands trapped with no food, water, heat or power. Images taken on Friday and released by private US satellite firm Maxar showed Russian forces were continuing to deploy closer to Kyiv and firing artillery toward residential areas, according to the company's analysis. Multiple homes and buildings were on fire and widespread damage was seen throughout the town of Moschun, northwest of Kyiv, Maxar said. Away from the battlefields, wary of angering Moscow further, they declined Ukraine's call for a speedy admission to the EU.

"wary of angering Moscow further" "they declined Ukraine's call for a speedy admission to the EU.

 Angering Moscow further? Is there anything short of nuclear weapons that Moscow is not utilizing to flatten Ukraine? A shameful statement by the EU.

The Russian military has kidnapped the Mayor of Melitopol (151,000) in southern Ukraine. Is he on their "to be executed" list"?

The city of Dnipro (981,000) on the Dneiper River was struck by Russian cruise missiles. This is the hometown of Yulia Timoshenko, the leader of the Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) political party..

I've grown to admire her. A Ukrainian patriot, her native language being Russian. She decided to learn Ukranian, to become bi lingual and fully celebrate her country and its people.

For those unfamiliar with her:

Yulia Volodymyrivna Tymoshenko is a Ukrainian politician, people's Deputy of Ukraine (1997–2000, 2002–2005, 2006–2007, 2007, 2014–2019, and since 2019), Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine for the fuel and energy complex (1999–2001), Prime Minister of Ukraine from February to September 2005 and from December 2007 to March 2010. She was first and so far the only woman to serve as prime minister in the history of Ukraine.

Also known in Ukraine as the "Gas Queen" because she made a fortune in the gas transit industry.

Pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych had her arrested, tried, convicted, and imprisoned on trumped-up charges from 2011-2014.

The Euromaidan movement released her from prison the day after Yanukovych boarded a helicopter and fled to Russia.

I read her letter pleading with Yanukovych to sign the EU agreement, in return she would willingly remain in prison indefinitely. She warned him of the consequences to Ukraine if he did not, and of course he didn't listen.
