Saying that "the darkest corners of the Internet" pose a real threat to children, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday rolled out a plan that would, by default, block pornography on most computers, smartphones and tablets.

British wireless and Internet providers have agreed to put adult-content filters on phones, public Wi-Fi networks and home computers in the coming months. By the end of the year, the filters will become the default setting for anyone setting up broadband Internet service at home, Cameron said.

In my opinion, this is pretty pathetic. Is it really too much to ask that parents take responsibility for keeping their children out of things that they should not be getting into? With a little effort, access to porn sites can be restricted by the computer administrator (which should be the parent). If they are not tech savvy, many programs and services that prevent access to certain types of websites are readily available.

It won't work. It doesn't work in China and it won't work here. Anyone with a proxy or VPN that masks their IP as a foreign address will give them access to the goods.

I do think that porn causes some social problems, but it's not up to the prudes in government to censor the whole internet. Child porn laws were the gateway to governmeny spying online. No more concessions. If they can crack down on porn then it will give them more mechanisms of control. Besides, as I already mentioned, it won't work.

Government needs to let go, not tighten its grip. Pun intended.

Porn is not a threat to children. Why won't this stupid **** die? Why is it that every once in a while we get a bunch of prudes that are scared of porn taking steps to restrict it's access? Just go the hell away and learn that the human form and human interaction is not something to be scared of. Idiots.

Why do Americans and Brits like to censor things?

The English speaking peoples are all essentially prudes........................
The French are much better but also much more racist and offensive which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I could maaaaybe understand it if it was opt-in, but this is just ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if they're confirmed or notified very publicly when they opt-out. They're trying to count on men being too timid to opt out of the program due to the backlash they'll get from their gf's/spouses.

Another win for the nanny state.

I looked at 3 threads this morning. In all 3 you attacked, in some harder or lesser form, either British people or western civilization.

You have a problem buddy?

Normally I would not be bothered by this considering they do give an option to get the porn if you want. The problem arises in that by opting in you will register yourself as a person who wants porn. This will then someday be leaked or used against a person seeking public office, going for a job, or in some civil suit like divorce proceedings. The reverse should be done where customers are given an option to opt out of porn and to install the porn filters. In this case it would be far more effective and not result in people using potentially virus ridden proxy sites or programs to go get porn. Plus, what do they consider porn? Are boobies in a R rated movie considered porn? Do I have to say i want porn just to watch an uncut R rated movie in britain?

get out of people's bedrooms. If you want to offer filters go do it. Do not force them onto people. This does not apply to child porn or potential snuff films or illegal acts being viewed like actual rape, though I am perfectly fine with people viewing simulated rape porn involving consenting actors.

I never had a problem with the british until i lived with an american britophile. WTF happened to britain since the middle of lasrt century when they were releasing some very edgy and talented media? Now it is all boy bands and pop-eurotrash which makes taylor Swift look edgy and deep. They made many pre-90's musical revolutions, and now they are producing brittany spears level crapola. Oh, and their obsession with the royal family is just creepy as hell. Not that america is not getting close with the kenedys and the bushes, but god damn. Oh, and Sir Elton John? Shouldn't that be Dame? Yes there are manly gay guys, but if Elton could sprout fairy wings no one would be shocked. But they did do a good makover on James bond.

yes, i kid because Britain is pretty much america's big brother. Probably the more responsible and anal retentive one.

You should get yourself checked out then. It's quite pathological in your case, I fear.

Why is it pathetic? The world would be a better place without rampant pornography. I read somewhere the average age of first exposure to porn nowadays is ELEVEN.

In no way is that healthy, normal, or good.

I actually doubt that the EU would allow this, as it is anti-competitive. That will of course piss of the Conservatives in the UK, which most likely is why they have proposed this beyond idiotic thing in the first place.

We are the only animal that wears clothing, keeps our kids from seeing sex, and seem to be the only one who thinks it is a dirty and immoral act despite it being completely necessary for the survival of the species presently. What is the problem with it? I am pretty sure sex is healthy, normal, and good. I would actually say there is a pretty good case those who have hangups about it and consider it dirty and wrong are suffering from a sort of psychological disease spread by the moral police.

So you want to be like the animals? Good for you, have fun running around naked and sniffing your own poop.

Most humans aspire to something higher than that. We do a lot of things animals don't - invent complex tools, further our understanding of the world, and aspire to help others.

We're the only animal with the mental capacity to take something and pervert it. Have you ever seen an animal videotape their sex? Your example is as stupid as it gets. Is sex normal, of course.

You still have not told us why having sex is not normal, healthy, or good. You can try to make up fallicious arguments, but the reality is that sex is very normal, in fact your parents even had it once that we know of. Pretty much most people here today are here because of sex. It is a perfectly healthy biological function of the human body. It is actually something our bodies do and it serves a purpose for us. As for being a bad thing i guess your parents having you is something you consider bad because you consider the act that got you here bad. Your argument makes no sense at all because you cannot tell us how the act of sex or even nudity is bad, unhealthy, or even abnormal. You aspire to be above an animal, but in this case the animals are above you. They can do these things without mental hangups and other psychological problems due to what is basically brainwashing. They do not freak out over the natural state of nakedness. They do not have a breakdown because some of them mate, yet for some reason with all this advancement in the human race we have members who cannot seem to deal with a perfectly natural biological function without losing their minds.
