LONDON, April 22 (Reuters) - British police said on Friday they were gathering evidence after receiving about 50 reports of alleged war crimes following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

London's Metropolitan Police War Crimes Team said its specialist detectives were assessing some 50 referrals made since the start of the conflict as part of action in support of an International Criminal Court investigation.

"We’ve had around 50 referrals into us and we expect that number to grow over the coming weeks as more and more people who fled from Ukraine arrive here in the UK," said Detective Chief Superintendent Dominic Murphy from London police's Counter Terrorism Command.

Johnson? Yes, by making it as difficult as possible for refugees fleeing for their lives to obtain a visa. Every other country in Europe, except Britain, waived visa requirements. Johnson's excuse? 'National security'-because women and children (the vast majority of Ukraine's refugees), pose such a significant threat. It's embarrassing, inhumane and downright nasty.

Ukraine: The most corrupt state in Europe?

"The economy made a partial recovery after losses in 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region. Concerns over corruption persisted: the Pandora Papers, a leaked cache of data on secretive offshore deals, named the current President as a former beneficiary of offshore companies, along with 37 other Ukrainian politicians.

"In October, parliament replaced the speaker after he opposed the swift passing of legislation to limit the influence of oligarchs. In December, former President Petro Poroshenko was named as a criminal suspect in a state treason case."

All war crimes warrant prosecution, but it's hard to imagine the courts of any NATO countries impartially investigating charges against Ukrainian forces.

Irrelevant to the Russian war crimes.

Jurisdiction, competence, bias to name a few.

Also I find it odd that they have not investigated the war crimes of the British military over the years then..... there has been plenty.

You throw out words without explaining.

Jurisdiction. What about it?

Competence. And?

Bias. Perhaps. Bias against civilians being shot in the head.

Whataboutism doesn't play well.

They dont have it. This is happening in Ukraine. So either the Ukrainians do it themselves, which wont be accepted by Russia and its allies, or an international organisation with no links to either side does it on the request of the Ukrainian and Russian governments. Remember, Ukraine is also accused of war crimes.

Competence. And?

When was the last time they handled a war crimes investigation, if ever?

Bias. Perhaps. Bias against civilians being shot in the head.

No, bias as in the UK government has loved Russian money for decades, and is now at least on paper... giving Ukraine tons of weapons and aid.

Not to mention we are talking about a government who refuses to hand back the Chagos Islands and has its own issues of war crimes going back to the 50s-70s, that have never really been addressed.

Actually the UK can investigate anything they wish. They simply can't prosecute.

And it is irrelevant if they had done it before. How many cases had the Hague adjudicated before their creation. None.

We did business with Hitler's Germany before he started invading everyone. Then we armed our allies. So what? Nuremberg trials shouldn't have happened?

Chagos Islands =/= Ukraine

Whataboutism rejected.

Wow, that's something. UK police examining Ukrainian war crimes.

Then what the hell is the point? It is just waste of time and money for a country that is running a raging deficit.

And it is irrelevant if they had done it before. How many cases had the Hague adjudicated before their creation. None.
No, because we actually do have investigators that have done it before.. why not use them? By all means, start investigations by entities that can prosecute those doing the war crimes and lets do this with all nations that have committed war crimes in the last 20 years and beyond.

Eh? What kind of babbling is this? You also supported Saddam before taking him out and committing war crimes in Iraq.. so what?

Chagos Islands =/= Ukraine
LOL one of the war crimes that needs investigating in Ukraine, is the forced relocation of people to Siberia, and what did the British do on the Chagos Islands?

The point is finding out the length and breadth of the war crimes.

The fact other investigators exist is irrelevant.

Saddam. So what? Guess what. He too invaded another sovereign nation.

And the forced deportation to Siberia was the USSR. Not the Ukrainians.

Chagos Whataboutism ignored.

It seems to bother you that the investigation might take place.

Why?

What jurisdiction do British police have on anything outside of England, much less war crimes in another country?

Apparently the individual countries gather evidence presented to them locally, and relay it to some International organization.

Isn't there enough unsolved crime in Britain where they don't need to waste time and resources looking abroad for more?
