A man in Hong Kong has become the first confirmed patient to be infected with the coronavirus a second time, according to researchers at the University of Hong Kong.

The finding suggests that some patients who recover from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, may have only short-lived immunity from reinfection. The case will likely also be significant for scientists who have been working on treatments using antibodies from recovered coronavirus patients, and those who have been scrambling to develop a safe and effective vaccine.

Well, it looks like there is no immunity for this disease and that likely means that no vaccine will ever be effective. If you can't build antibodies then you're going to get the disease again and again until you die.

He did not show symptoms. That is exactly how virological immunity should work (intrinsic immunity has a different mechanism). Immunity does not mean you have a magic Star Trek force shield around you preventing any of the virus to which you are immune from getting into your body. It means that if it gets into your body, your body recognizes it sufficiently quickly that it can eradicate it before it spreads enough to cause symptoms. But until it is eradicated, you are technically infected.

The only "uh oh" would be if he was reinfected and came down with the symptoms again.

This actually is not unexpected. A lot of people do not develop sufficient antibodies, and it had already been shown that the live virus dismantles some immunity protections when it infects someone , and that the antibodies from being infected can fade quickly if someone had a mild case. This just confirms what was thought.

In other words, it's making a mountain out of a mole hill.

His first case was symptomatic. His second case was only caught because he was traveling.

One data point doesn't make a line, but if it turns out that most people - assuming he isn't a freak and that many people can be reinfected - are asymptomatic the second time around, means that the disease will spread to people not previously infected at an even higher rate.
