DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates announced on Saturday a major overhaul of the country’s Islamic personal laws, allowing unmarried couples to cohabitate, loosening alcohol restrictions and criminalizing so-called “honor killings.”

The broadening of personal freedoms reflects the changing profile of a country that has sought to bill itself as a Westernized destination for tourists, fortune-seekers and businesses despite its Islamic legal code that has previously triggered court cases against foreigners and outrage in their home countries.

The announcement said nothing of other behavior deemed insulting to local customs that has landed foreigners in jail in the past, such as acts of homosexuality, cross-dressing and public displays of affection.

It's a start. Not a big one...but a start nevertheless.

a start of what? feminism fails in warfare, iran was secular until they fought iran iraq war

Good.
Do you really think that without the Trump Middle East peace deal that this would have come about?

Yep... Iran wasn't secular prior to the Iran-Iraq war.

The war was BECAUSE of the Iranian theocracy.
right and who won? the degenerate secular culture or the theocracy?

Are you trying to be wrong?

The Iranian revolution happened... Iran was no longer secular.

Educate yourself.
and iran theocracy won not secular americanims

UAE has always been a very tolerant nation. If they are extending that tolerance to Muslims in a greater capacity thats pretty amazing. Dubai and Abu Dhabi were both pretty tolerant places. Pretty much anything you could do in Europe you could do there...as long as you are at resorts and private beaches and not in public beaches where Muslim families gather.

VanceMack:

Tolerant? Tell that to their Shi'a minority or to the Yemenis they are killing in the tens of thousands. Yes, they're better than Saudi Arabia, but that sets the bar very low.

Cheers and be well.

How does that conflict with what I wrote? Did you MISS this part? "If they are extending that tolerance to Muslims in a greater capacity thats pretty amazing."

Gulf Stste Shi'a cannot go to the private resorts and private beaches for a respite from the oppression meted out by the intolerance of the Sunni majority. Nor can Yemenis escape the death being rained down upon them by UAE strike aircraft and mercenary troops paid by the UAE since 2015. Complementing an authoritarian patriarch for beating his wife and children less this year is a simile for applauding the UAE's baby-steps with regards to it's use of systemic oppression and violence against the "other". Congratulations are due when the job is done or well on its way to being done, not with the first tentative steps in the right direction.

Cheers and be well.

Again...you are still not pointing out anything in conflict with what I said.

For many years, the Emirates took a pretty neutral stance with its Arab neighbors. That bit them in the ass a few times when terrorists used Yemen to launch activities against targets in UAE. The Yemen civil war has certainly dragged other factions into the mix. There is a saying...play stupid games, win stupid prizes. When people in Yemen openly adopted Al Qaida, it had certain consequences. But one thing I learned form the 7 years I spent in the middle east is non Arabs that take sides in their conflicts usually dont know **** all about the actual conflicts.
