Trump announces the U.S. has terminated all trade discussions with Canada.

Canada has announced a digital services tax on American technology companies. Based on this, Trump has terminated all trade discussions and will inform Canada, within 7 days, what tariffs will be in place should Canada want to do business with the U.S.
 
"It's been a bone of contention between Canada and the U.S. for years, with former president Joe Biden's ambassador to Canada warning during his tenure that, if a DST was enacted, the U.S. would hit back.

While Canada and other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries had been discussing some sort of global DST, the Trudeau government decided to move ahead with its own tax rather than wait for co-ordinated action.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said this week Ottawa plans to push ahead with the tax even while negotiations with Trump and his tariffs are ongoing.

Well that's odd given Bessent said that the G7 had come to an agreement on discussing the DST although he didnt specifically mention the digital services tax and withdrew the tax penalty piece from the BBB.

Let's see how long it takes for Trump to fold like a cheap suit once folks dependent on trade with Canada become vocal.
 
It's more likely that Donald's tendency to flip-flop, TACO and be an overall unreliable partner while exhibiting the intellectual maturity of a 4th grader and the emotional maturity of a toddler, combined with growing dementia and cognitive decline, is contributing to him finding it "very difficult" to do any deal with anybody.
 
Canada will protect her vulnerable Industries just like the US does. Carney has a few bargaining chips, the golden dome, rare earth minerals and the DST as well as steel tariffs. They'll work it out.
 
He made all sorts of daft comments about that as well, by misrepresenting the hight tariff rates post quota as the rate applied to all imported US dairy.
 
Here is another interesting piece I just ran across as I work to get more caught up on what's been going on recently with these U.S./Canada trade talks.

"Pressure had been mounting on Ottawa from Canadian and U.S. business groups to pause the planned digital tax before it’s set to kick in on June 30 to allow space for those negotiations.

But Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said last week the legislation was passed by Parliament and Canada is “going ahead” with the tax.

Well, I guess Canada can do whatever it likes on trade. They depend on the U.S. for a good part of their defense with the belief we will show up to save them. Or maybe they realize that nobody would bother with attacking Canada, nobody wants it but Trump.

Except you have never shown up for us but we have shown up for you at least three times. Canada would like to partner with the States on trade and security but we can also chart our own way.....you are not as important as you think.
