GOP Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell

11/15/18
The Republican leader of the U.S. Senate has blocked a bipartisan effort to pass legislation to protect the special counsel investigating ties between Russia and President Donald Trump's election campaign. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on November 14 said he wouldn't allow a vote on the legislation because he doesn't believe it is needed, despite Trump's replacement of Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week with an aide who has repeatedly criticized Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. "There’s been no indication...that the investigation will not be allowed to finish, and it should be allowed to finish," McConnell said. Trump has frequently called the investigation a "hoax" and a "witch hunt" and repeatedly asserted he has the authority to fire Mueller.

Democrats in Congress, who gained control over the House of Representatives in elections last week, have been pushing for legislation to protect Mueller from being fired. Several Republicans in the Senate have allied with Democrats in demanding legislative protections for Mueller. Republican Senator Jeff Flake, a critic of Trump who is retiring at the end of the year, co-sponsored the legislation and joined Democrats in their bid to pass it in a unanimous consent vote on the Senate floor on November 14. "The president now has this investigation in his sights and we all know it," Flake said after McConnell blocked the move to unanimously approve the legislation. Flake said the bill has enough support in the Senate to pass and he and the bill's Democratic sponsors will try "again and again" to bring it up for a vote before Congress adjourns at the end of the year. Flake also threatened to block Senate votes on dozens of Trump's judicial nominees who are awaiting confirmation until the Senate votes on the Mueller protection bill.

Flake has threatened to hold up all Senate GOP judicial nominee confirmations. Even Trump Senate ally Sen. Lindsey Graham says this legislation is necessary. Mitch McConnell seems determined to do his part in forcing a Constitutional crisis when Trump orders his DoJ lackey Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to end the Mueller investigation. Former USAG Jeff Sessions was fired at this time (before the Mueller Report is finished and published) for a reason.

I have heard from friends in D.C. that the Mueller investigation is almost complete. Mr. Mueller has discharged many of his investigative team and DoJ lawyers are busy writing the report.

If McConnell doesn't think there's anything to worry about then why not support it as an added safety measure in case Trump wakes up one morning and decides to end the investigation?

Looks like McConnell is being a good little lacky.

**** McConnell. Out of one side of his mouth he calls for bipartisanship, and out of the other side he does this. **** him.

That is the most unflattering picture in a world filled with unflattering pictures of that man.

I can't believe that once upon a time, in a land far far away when Donald Trump was a lying reality TV game show host cheating on all of his wives and donating to the Democrats, I actually supported McConnell. I guess if there is anything positive about the anti-Christ sitting in the Oval Office it's that my eyes were opened.

Because then it would give the appearance that McConnell doesn't trust Trump to not interfere. But McConnell is well aware that neither Trump/Whitaker is trustworthy.

A major problem is that Trump appointed Matthew Whitaker as a temporary USAG (250 days max). Whitaker is on record as disparaging the Mueller investigation and saying it should be closed down. He comes to the job then with a huge bias and will do whatever his benefactor Trump wishes, either overtly wishes or covertly wishes.

Bottom line, McConnell knows that a Constitutional crisis is only a hairsbreadth (a tweet) away, and yet he plays politics and stymies legislation that would spare the nation such a poisonous chalice.

Cool! It's nice to watch the Progressives get all tied up in pearl clutch moments worried their Mueller witch-hunt would end. Even when it doesn't.

Yeah, Mueller has been successfully indicting and prosecuting quite a few witches...

The bill in an UCONSTITUTIONAL FARCE; Congress cannot pass a law limiting the power of the POTUS over the EXECUTIVE BRANCH, which would require amending the Constitution.

Of course, the American Civics IGNORANT left is bereft of any actual knowledge regarding this, as THIS THREAD PROVES.

Sorry but Congress cannot pass a bill limiting the POTUS' authority over the Cabinet, INCLUDING the DOJ...ALL OF IT.

Did ANY OF YOU ever bother to learn American Civics?

The only case he has that has anything to do with the 2016 election (REMEMBER THAT??) is blowing up in his face.

You may want to send Lindsay Graham and the other senators the same memo.

A claim for which you have absolutely no evidence, and for which exists plenty of evidence to the contrary, but you have your fantasy! Does it make you feel better?:lamo
