U.S.S. New York

IN A city still emerging from the floods of Hurricane Katrina, a ship has begun to rise from the ashes of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Bringing together America’s two great calamities of the 21st century, the USS New York is being built in New Orleans with 24 tones of steel taken from the collapsed World Trade Centre.

Shortly after 11 September 2001, Governor of New York George E. Pataki wrote a letter to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England requesting that the Navy bestow the name USS New York on a surface warship involved in the War on Terror in honor of September 11's victims. In his letter, the Governor said he understood state names are currently reserved for submarines, but asked for special consideration so the name could be given to a surface ship. The request was approved 28 August 2002.

The 684-foot-long amphibious transport dock ship will be built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in New Orleans and carry a Navy crew of 363 and 699 Marines. The ship will be used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked air cushions or conventional landing craft or amphibious vehicles, augmented by helicopters or vertical take off and landing aircraft in amphibious assault, special operations, or expeditionary warfare missions.

Due to routine and natural set backs, this ship is scheduled to leave "dry dock" in mid '07. The ship's motto? "Never Forget."

Apparently, the ships motto is fitting.

Many of our naval ships carry with it a bit of American history on the oceans. It's a long time tradition that offers the sailor a sense of being home.

Yeah that's cool! A nice symbol for the terrorists.

However I'm not sure the victims would have liked it to be a warship. Why not a hospital ship for the marines, or better, a humanitarian ship, that could avoid terror attacks by making the USA liked in the poor countries, couldn't it?

We're American. Notice how a war based on revenge is widely accepted? If there was some great obvious connection between Saddam and 9/11, the war in Iraq would have the same unanimous cry of revenge behind it. The victims of 9/11 would have liked nothing more (besides surviving) than to exact revenge upon their murderers.

A warship is about death and destruction, not about spreading rainbows of inspiration for the third world. However, this ship, like all of our others, will also serve far more humanitarian needs than war throughout the globe.

The poor countries know better than anyone that their only hope for a progressive future lies in what America can give them as they reflect back on European colonialism. Being "liked" isn't a problem if you look in the right places. I can think of an almost entire African continent (to include the French colonies inthe west), a vast majority of Asian land, and South American jungle that look to us for hope. Problem is we are too stupidly fixed upon traditional habit with the Middle East and Europe.

You are probably talking about the fact the the EU is Nr.1 for humanitarian aid :mrgreen: (you can check, that's true)

As for the USA, whatever they do abroad now is seen as imperialism so I'm not very optimist about your chances to be "liked" in the ME :doh

That's easy to say because I'm safe from terror attacks, but revenge is not a solution at all.

We've already discussed Europe's tithing plate to dictators and brutal regimes in Africa. Money in the mail is no substitute for local presence and protection...along with the foriegn aid.

I'm afraid the pretty niumbers that Europeans like to use as their masque of great humanitarian aid doesn't cut to the issue.

I assume that you are aware that the third world does extend beyond the Arab and Persian sands in the Middle East? We are seen as "imperialists" only to Europeans who prefer a more rotting prescription for the world. It really doesn't matter what they think of us. They've always just used us anyway.

First, why were there terror attacks?
=> because you're a scapegoat

why do they need a scapegoat?
=> because they need to unite warriors in order to change the local situation, gain local power, get respect.

why the USA? why the WTC?
=> because its the symbol of the American capitalism, seen abroad as imperialism, "the cause of our problems". A good old terror attacks and you can be sure everybody is afraid of you and talk about you:
-> you show you're powerful
-> you're respected by your allies and gain local power

solutions?
=> unluckily in the long term only. From book I read, I can give you several propositions:
-> education, so that they get aware we are not evil and that violence is not a solution to their problems
-> economic growth, so that they don't live in misery and may live "normally", without the need to have scapegoats (germany 1920's = misery => fascism => jewish scapegoat)
-> respect (many are humiliated because they think they are backwarded), equitable relations with the West (not dominator vs dominated) (germany 1920's => humiliation of defeat => revenge)

That may look childish but I'm convinced it could work.

Thanks bub. I've stated all of this in the past enough times (though I have presented it much better - I can present it again if you like). But, it's got nothing to do with an American ship for which you assume a voice about, but I guess you contributed in your own way.

Being used by Europe has nothing to do with the third world except for taking our focus away from where it should be.

Iraq is Iraq. There's a whole big world out there for which American troops and funds are busy (while European tithing to foriegn aid goes to corrupt governments that further our obstacles).

You seem to not have the ability to seperate the Middle East from the rest of the third world. And they are two very distinct things. One is set in hardened brittle concrete for which their governments will never immediately allow such liberal rainbow therapy. The other is struggling for an identity for which your liberal rainbow therapy will work and is being implemented.
