The Defense Department is "confident" a balloon spotted over Montana is a surveillance balloon from China, a senior defense official said Thursday.

A senior defense official said the U.S. has engaged with Chinese officials "urgently," and President Biden has been briefed on the situation.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley and vice chair Joint Chief Gen. Christopher Grady recommended against taking "kinetic action" because of danger from debris, the defense official said. The U.S. government has also determined the balloon does not pose a threat, the defense official said.

Pentagon spokesman Brigadier Gen. Patrick Ryder said the balloon is "currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground."

China's foreign ministry said Friday that, "Speculation and hype are not conducive to the solution of the problem until the facts are clear. We are learning about the verification of this matter. We hope both sides can handle matter calmly and prudently."

This type of action from the Chinese government warrants an IMMEDIATE response from the Biden Administration, instead, this was treated like page 6 news.

What more do you think is required?

Since the US is already engaging with China on the subject, what more do you want?

A source familiar with the situation told CBS News that, when briefed on Wednesday, Mr. Biden had initially wanted to shoot down the balloon. But as he sought military options from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Milley and others, they advised against such action because of the risk to Americans on the ground.

It is page 6 newsworthy.

We know about it, the Biden administration is aware of the situation and are monitoring it.

What response would you suggest?

A strongly worded admonishing return receipt letter?

A nuke dropped on Beijing?

A declaration of war on China asked for of Congress by the President?

They do not say at what altitude, above FL600 its uncontrolled airspace and has the right to be there below that it doesnt.

Do you agree with this?

Song Zhongping, a former People’s Liberation Army instructor, said the US should not assume the balloon belonged to China without investigating. “China releasing balloons is completely reasonable and legaland does not infringe on American territory,” Song said. “The US should not view such common Chinese military activity through coloured lenses … Balloons have a lot of functions and surveillance is merely one of them. Weather forecasting, or monitoring the ionosphere is also done by high-altitude balloons.” He also said for a balloon of this size to successfully enter US airspace and hover over important missile silo fields indicated a lapse in security. “This shows that the US airspace defence system is only for show and is unreliable. For them to sensationalise this topic only exposes the flaws in their systems,” he said.

Launch a nuke!!!!

(Seriously, we are agitating China and China is agitating us... what did everyone think would happen?)

The President's gut reaction was the correct reaction. This is clearly a Chinese balloon, we shout shoot it down immeadiatly.

Austin and Milley should be "shot down" too. Figuratively speaking. In a sitation like this a good military leader should consider: "What would Patton do?" Show weakness and indecision in the face of the enemy, and they will take that as an invitation to up their game.

because of the risk to Americans on the ground.
Yeah, all those large dense populated areas over Montana and the Dakotas.

sheesh!

Biden has been too lax on China. I remember Trump ruffling feathers and slapping tariffs on China. He squeezed pressure on them, even threatening US companies to stop doing business over there.

And how did that work out for the average American? Oh yeah the average American paid MORE for goods. Good plan….. NOT. It’s amateur hour with the right. The right has become incredibly stupid and moronic.

And why hasn't Biden lifted those tariffs?

I think what you "remember" is a bit roses and sunshine.

What Trump tried cause collateral damage in China, the US, and handful of other nations. What no one wants to admit, and no one seems to have a good answer for, is China's economy is dependent on exports to various nations and our economy is dependent on what China exports to the tune of hundreds of billions per year.

Now you can pretend that Trump somehow curtailed China's ambitions but I would argue that even with Covid and their own domestic troubles their military is still growing, their ambitions for regional controls is still on the uptick, they are getting more bold with their actions all throughout Obama to Trump to Biden, and they are still very well in the #1 spot in Exports as a nation.

Patton never saw a war he didn’t want to fight. He also was so mindlessly aggressive he couldn’t comprehend normal human reactions to combat, as his abuse of soldiers suffering from PTSD shows.

Yeah but he kept making his merchandise there didn't he?
