U.S. manufacturers plead for tariffs on Canada, Mexico to be lifted

U.S. tariffs on Canada, Mexico need to come off, manufacturers plead

American automakers, aluminum producers, manufacturers and farmers are running out of time, money and patience as the North American tariff standoff persists, and they’re pleading with the United States to put an end to it.

Industry emissaries are warning U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Mexican and Canadian steel and aluminum, as well as their reciprocal countermeasures, are rapidly undermining whatever benefits the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement will produce once it takes effect.

“The damage from the reciprocal trade actions in the steel dispute far outweighs any benefit that may accrue to them from the USMCA,” the group writes in a letter released this week by a coalition of more than 40 different industry associations and lobby groups.

“The continued application of metal tariffs means ongoing economic hardship for U.S. companies that depend on imported steel and aluminum, but that are not exempted from these tariffs. Producers of agricultural and manufactured products that are highly dependent on the Mexican and Canadian markets are also suffering serious financial losses.”

COMMENT:-

The Association of American Steel and Aluminum Manufacturing Companies is expected to be issuing a stinging rebuttal shortly.

"All Americans should be proud to bear a little bit of the paid required to secure the profits of American steel and aluminum companies." - right?

It's quite amusing and flat out pathetic, that those that are calling for people and businesses to "bear a little pain" are the ones that aren't feeling any pain because of this. That goes for tariffs and the shutdown.

The American steel and aluminum companies screwed up by raising their prices. They should have expanded their output as much as they could at the pricing before the tariffs. Foolish on their part, they could have seized more market share and cemented better relationships with their manufacturing partners.

Really? Who are "they" to begin with? "Trade Emissaries".. LOL

Gullible much? :)

Tim-

Yes, the Trade Emissaries. Please post your evidence that no such letter was written, as reported in the article you said was fake.

True. It takes quite awhile to rebuild large industries like aluminum and steel. In true fair trade economics, you should always buy the cheaper source, but in "social economics" you should seek to keep domestic workers employed, and basic industries in country to insulate yourself from external problems.

If I was an industrial buyer of aluminum and steel, I would want the cheapest aluminum I could get and I really would not care about the social costs to the supplying country. Their unemployed can just f off and die.

Not my job, that is the role of the media that reported it. They didn't get a letter signed, "trade emissaries", ya know.. LOL

You're the one who said it was fake. The burden is on you to back up your post.

Now please post the evidence that they didn't write the letter, as the article claimed.

You can email all of the media outlets carrying the story and ask them who "they" are. But first you have to post your proof that this story is fake. I'm still waiting.

You can't wait until you're blue in the face for all I care. You, and a great many others on this forum continuously show your ineptitude at spotting manufactured news. Don't you get it by now? All one has to do is name unnamed sources for seemingly negligible stories, one's that might garner some attention for some that want to grasp onto anything that seemingly hurts Trump, but not enough to raise any serious attention, and whammo.. Hook line and sinker.. They are preying on the TDS'ers out there, like you, tres. :)

Okay, so you know it's fake, but you don't know why and have no proof. Got it.

The Globe and Mail didn't write the story - Canadian Press did.

But what about the terrific and fantastic Milk War?

What? The trade war is still on? But the author of "The Art of the Dunce" said they were so easy to win.

Okay, so you know it's fake, but you don't know why and have no proof. Got it.

Actually, it's really easy to spot. Just ask "Does Trump agree with this?"

If the answer is no, it's Fake News (And Hillary and/or Obama are probably involved somehow). If the answer is yes, it's such credible news you could bet your mother's life on.
