U.S. lawmakers move to curtail president's power to levy tariffs

U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday introduced legislation to limit the president's power to levy import tariffs on the grounds of national security.

The bills face an uncertain future but underscore bipartisan concerns on Capitol Hill over the rising costs of the Trump administration's trade policies. The United States in 2018 slapped duties on aluminum and steel from other countries, drawing criticism from lawmakers who support free trade and complaints of rising supply chain costs across business sectors.

Two bipartisan groups of lawmakers on Wednesday introduced legislation known as the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The bills would require Trump to have congressional approval before taking trade actions like tariffs and quotas under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The law currently allows the president to impose such tariffs without approval from Capitol Hill.

COMMENT:-

This is absolutely unbelievable!!! Don't those people realize that the Founding Fathers Originally Intended for the President of the United States of America to be able to do whatever they felt like doing once they were elected????

LOL, that law gives the Prez every right to impose his will.. What are you having difficulty with, exactly? That, maybe, you don't like what "this" President is doing, or are you advocating all future President having to go through congress on foreign trade? Good luck with that one, ..

it was congress that gave up their power on this a long time ago because they didn't want to deal with it.
not that they will want to deal with it in the future either.

Toomey led a similar push last year that did not go to vote.
Did you ever ponder why that is?

Because Trump has the law on his side, (given to him by congress) and has the vested authority to levy tariffs because in the past our republic showed congress wasn't up to the task.

Did you know that "delegated power" can always be "undelegated"?

i support removing the loophole that allows the president to start trade wars unilaterally.

Yes, now that it's been shown the American people are willing and able to elect a petulant child POTUS, that change is needed.

There will be another change required when man-baby Trump declares a national emergency in order to erect a monument to himself.

True but at that time no one could even dream we would have a Looney like trump in office.

They are seeing that not having checks and balances over an insane out of control president is a very bad idea...

The rumour that the "design specs" for "The Wall" call for both sides of it to have a huge letter "T" topped by a crown every 30' are absolutely and totally false.

tarriffs seem to be working in getting these countries to the table to talk.
the fact is that our trade imbalance has been causing an issue for too long.

all these free trade agreements do nothing but shift american wealth overseas.
you want to know why manufacturing and other major industries are gone?

free trade allowed companies to shift the wealth overseas.
