WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. court on Monday ordered Pyongyang to pay $501 million in damages for the torture and death of U.S. college student Otto Warmbier, who died in 2017 shortly after being released from a North Korea prison.

Warmbier’s parents sued North Korea in April over their son’s death. The 22-year-old student died days after he was returned to the United States in a coma, and an Ohio coroner said the cause of death was lack of oxygen and blood to the brain.

This young guy was caught removing a propaganda poster from a hotel corridor wall on surveillance CCTV & was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He spent 17 months there before being released in bad physical condition and died back in the U.S. shortly after his release. He had apparently been maltreated by the N. Koreans.

This judgement is going to be hard to collect because of current sanctions that affect banking transactions.

We do have about $63M of NK government assets frozen in the US.

Hard? Impossible.

So-called "international law" only matters as much as the blood and treasure that might be spent enforcing it. Plaintiffs will get a default judgment and we're not going to invade NK just to drag Kim back for 'justice'.

The video of him being removed from the court room looked like he was severely depressed. As anyone would be. I will always wonder it he hanged himself and did not sever his spine but cut off his oxygen long enough to cause anoxic brain injury. His brain injury is consistent with prolonged oxygen deprivation. I wonder if there was evidence of other types of injuries consistent with torture.

That's for when the next democrat is elected so it can be flown in cash pallets back to Pyongyang.
