U.S. budget deficit to hit record $3.3 trillion this year, CBO says

Not and get prepared for the next major war at the same time. Winning that one decisively I believe is of far, far greater importance than transferring money to people no longer productive anyway.

This may shock you but most of the world are US allies who are never going to invade and the countries that might have no desire to invade anyway.

This idea that the US is always on the brink of destruction at the hands of filthy foreigners is madness and just ends up with you spending vast quantities on defense that you could use on things like infrastructure which you can all use. Maybe have a rail system that isn't a laughingstock.

We are not in danger of being invaded by any other country so we have no reason to be at war. We’ve not won a war since ww2 despite having been in 8 since then.

What makes you people think an "invasion" is the only foreign danger to the U.S.?

We already have the best freight rail system in the world (according to The Economist magazine). And not that many Americans want to ride passenger rail.

Uh, because Th says literally the only danger that could happen to the US.

Staggeringly stupid post on your part.

Our economy could be destroyed and millions of American citizens killed without a single foreign soldier stepping on American soil

The reason not many people want to use rail is because it's underfunded and slow.
There's just no comparison between Europe and the US when it comes to passenger railways (I have no idea about freight) and China has spent a fortune building an immense high-speed network.

Just so you know I think the hyperloop is a pie in the sky piece of junk that will fail massively.
The UK isn't using it for the HS2 program which is a £75B high speed rail project that's finally in the build phase and neither is Japan who've just announced a new route for the Bullet Train for the first time in 30 years. The idea of 600mph trains is great but hyperloop is not going to work.

Nonsense. And that isn’t an act or war, or excuse to go to war.

Have you ever read about the death toll and economic damage from an EMP attack on the United States? Half a dozen nuclear weapons detonated in space over the U.S. (about 100 miles altitude). The death toll in the U.S. would be in the hundreds of thousands and the economic damage could take years to fix.

Major exaggeration. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, the U.S. was doing just fine

and he ****ed it up by downplaying and denying.

it's just who he is. he needs his daddy to save him yet again.

That is a direct attack on the US and would constitute going to war.

That is the point. But it would NOT constitute an "invasion" of the United States by any definition of the word. And people here have claimed that an "invasion" is the only threat the U.S. could possibly face. I'm pointing out that is not true.

It’s a direct military attack. Which is an invasion by a foreign army. Which is the only justification for the US to go to war.

At any rate the possibility of an EMP attack shows that there can be direct mortal threats to the U.S. without enemy military forces being anywhere near U.S. territory. And defending against such attacks is hideously expensive.

What about to assist our allies which we have signed treaty obligations to help protect?

Nope. Those are offensive wars on our part, and not justified.

Are you saying the U.S. should NOT fulfill its obligations under treaties to other nations?

The fake right wing deficit scolds are scheduled to return whenever there's a Democrat in the WH again. It's amazing too how the supposed "centrist" deficit scolds are put on hold any time there's a Republican in office. If Biden wins, they'll be on the Sunday shows every other week, in a very bipartisan, non-ideological, rational centrist-like way of course, demanding drastic budget cuts, because the deficits will kill us all!!! Sorry grandma, but Medicare just isn't sustainable at this rate, and it's Democrats who need to do the heavy lifting of cutting benefits and killing grandma with death panels.

It's all so predictable it's sad.
Maybe you haven't noticed we have a littler problem going on; "deficit scolds" have enough brains to realize emergencies override fiscal restraint; apparently yo and 99er are clever enough to grasp that.

I'm saying exactly what I posted. That is an offensive war. Use of force should only be used for defense of our nation. We are not responsible for defending the entire world, nor can we afford to.

trump and congressional republicans doubled the deficit within 2 years of him taking office, LONG before COVID hit.

we need QAnon, Jerry Falwell Jr. and Donald Trump to save us.

The US govt. has been been running a deficit for years. The pandemic just added more on top of the debt. imo, the US has a spending problem.

The federal government obviously has no problem spending - the problem is that congress critters refuse to raise the taxes required to pay for it. The key number to watch is annual per capital federal spending (now normally over $12K) which would require about $4T in total federal revenue to balance the federal “budget”.

The United States cannot be defended from within their own borders. Few countries can be. Offensive action is the only way to defend most nations.

Of course it can be defended from inside our borders. We have the largest airforce and navy on the planet. Offensive action is an act of war. We are not most nations.
