U.S. law enforcement officials expressed outrage over the release from prison of Mexican drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero and vowed to continue efforts to bring to justice the man who ordered the killing of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Caro Quintero was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 1985 kidnapping and killing of DEA agent Enrique Camarena but a Mexican federal court ordered his release this week saying he had been improperly tried in a federal court for state crimes.

The 60-year-old walked out of a prison in the western state of Jalisco early Friday after serving 28 years of his sentence.

The Association of Former Federal Narcotics Agents in the United States said it was "outraged" by Caro Quintero's early release and it blamed corruption within Mexico's justice system for his early release.

"The release of this violent butcher is but another example of how good faith efforts by the U.S. to work with the Mexican government can be frustrated by those powerful dark forces that work in the shadows of the Mexican 'justice' system," the organization said in a statement.

The DEA, meanwhile, said it "will vigorously continue its efforts to ensure Caro-Quintero faces charges in the United States for the crimes he committed."

But experts say the case against Caro Quintero was flawed from the beginning and his release is the result of a stronger federal justice system in Mexico, and it's not likely to have an impact in U.S.-Mexico relations.....snip~

U.S. angry over release of Mexican drug lord

We are now pushing for extradition of this guy. He has been locked up for 28 years and mostly out of the game. 60 years old.....think he amounts to much of a threat? What about with other Drug Lords. Any operations he had have been taken over. Thoughts upon the matter?

Check that.....he is definitely still in the game.

"Caro Quintero continues to launder the proceeds from narcotics trafficking and he maintains an alliance with drug trafficking organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel, most notably with Esparragoza Moreno's network," said Treasury Department spokesman John Sullivan, referring to Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno, also known as "El Azul," or "Blue" because of the dark color of his skin, who is allegedly a top leader of the Sinaloa cartel.

"Caro Quintero has used a network of family members and front persons to invest his fortune into ostensibly legitimate companies and real estate projects in the city of Guadalajara" said Adam Szubin, Director of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. Caro Quintero has spent almost his entire sentence at a prison on the outskirts of that city, Mexico's second-largest city

Caro Quintero is said to have pioneered links between Colombian cocaine cartels and the Mexican smugglers who transport their drugs into the United States.

Mexican court releases drug lord who ordered murder of DEA agent - Investigations

We are wanting the Mexican government to prosecute on Due Process.....but the drug lords have bought the best attorneys in the world and having cases overturned. All on Due Process.

My thoughts are this, the guy is still a threat. When he went to jail his cartel did fall apart in the way that it dissolved, yet at the same time it branched into other cartels, like the Tijuana and Juarez cartel and of course the already forming Sinaloa. From what I've been hearing they are all close family organizations and may be willing to return control and he is vowing to take out Los Zetas, which has really taken off in recent years. Could be hearsay or not. Either way, the guy still has some control and it will be extremely interesting to see what happens next. They don't call him "El Número Uno" for nothing.

Heya AW. :2wave: Yeah I caught it.....and to top it off they released another that was involved with the taking out that DEA agent. He was responsible for coordinating with the Colombian Cartels.

Makes you wonder what is going on behind closed doors. Just going to have to watch and wait to see how this effects everything. This may be huge for both the US and Mexico, depending on which way it goes.

To hell with due process. One between the eyes is all it takes. Mount his severed head on the border, lit up with search lights for all to see.

It looks like now 2 others involved in that case will be released. Moreover not only will we have to be concerned. But even moreso now. Especially if this is the way Nieto is going to act. Think just how the rest of our relations are going to be with Mexico. All of these guys will be in touch with Guzman. If Quintero isn't there already.

According to Mexico.....they have no clue where he is.

Felix Gallardo's lawyers are widely expected to follow suit, in a case that has worried the White House, which on Sunday said it feared Caro Quintero's release could result in others involved in Camarena's killing being freed.

"We have seen reports that another individual connected to Camarena's killing could also be released," White House spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said, reading a statement.

The three aging drug lords hold a special place in Mexican narcotics lore. They were the leaders of the Guadalajara cartel, a forerunner of the Sinaloa cartel, which is led by Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, the country's most-wanted drug kingpin.

Pena Nieto, who took office in December, has shifted the focus away from capturing cartel bosses to tackling violent crimes such as extortion and kidnapping.

The shift has raised concerns that Mexico may cooperate less with U.S. security forces in the fight against the cartels.

"Pena Nieto has been slowly pulling back from the relationship the two countries had under Calderon, so I don't really see Pena Nieto responding with anything other than, 'This is our business and we'll let you know if we need anything,'" Longmire said.....snip~

Interesting to note a top leader in the Gulf Cartel was recently caught. So in the past couple weeks they've taken down some key members of the Gulf and Zetas cartels( which were one time one and the same) while releasing top Sinaloa members, which are their enemies. Hmmm...
