According to Igor Girkin, an ex-commander of Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, two tactical units of the Wagner private military group had been hit by the U.S. strikes on Feb. 7.

"One [unit] is practically totally destroyed, and the second is smashed ’to smithereens,’‘ he wrote in a post on the Vkontakte social network on Thursday, citing an unnamed source.

No uniformed Russian soldiers were killed in the U.S.-coalition strike on Deir Ezzor, Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement cited by Interfax on Thursday.

The ministry said that the attack ’demonstrates that the true goal of the continued illegal presence of U.S. forces on Syrian territory was the capture and control of economic assets that belong exclusively to the Syrian Arab Republic, not a fight against the ISIS international terrorist group,‘ Interfax reported.

The U.S.-led coalition released a statement saying that the airstrikes on Feb. 7 were carried out in ‘self-defense’ after ’an unprovoked attack" by Syrian pro-regime forces.

Russians were killed, but these Russians were Wagner personnel and not Russian soldiers.

Wagner Group (CHVK Vagner) is Russia's largest private military contractor (PMC) outfit. In Russia, such soldiers are called kontraktniki (contract personnel) rather than mercenaries. All Wagner kontraktniki have previous Russian military combat experience. They are deployed in eastern Ukraine, Ossetia, Transnistria, Chechnya, Syria, and wherever the Kremlin needs plausible deniability.

By mutual agreement and to avoid confliction, Assad/Russian forces and their air assets operate West of the Euphrates river. US/coalition/Kurdish forces and air assets operate East of the Euphrates rives. Pockets of ISIS in the city of Deir ez-Zor are currently being cleared by YPG/YPJ Kurdish forces. Deir ez-Zor sits right on the Euphrates river, and Assad forces (apparently with Wagner assistance) have been trying to intimidate the Kurds and capture Deir Ezzor which is the last significant city until one arrives at the Iraq border. Apparently, they pushed a bit too hard and were eliminated.

My sources say two tactical units of Wagner plus pro Syrian regime fighters were eliminated. I estimate ~200 dead. Russian media sources say the families of kontraktniki Vladimir Loginov, Kirill Ananyev, Alexei Ladygin, Stanislav Matveyev and Igor Kosoturov have been notified of their deaths in Syria. These families say many dozens more kontraktniki were also killed.

In Syria, they require Russian military logistics and follow Russian HQ directives. I think they can manage a straightforward/expeditious mission at the Company (250) level.

A glaring drawback is that alcoholism is high in Russian kontraktniki PMC outfits.
 

what i know without the "regulars" Muscovite hybrid armies are just loose bunch of semi- criminals, losers and alcoholics , a horde nothing more. they have been using such hybrid mixed ( kontraktniki with the "regulars") formation since Georgia war.


 

I know you're going to ask, so I'm going to be clear that I will not speculate on the composition of this force or whose control they were under. As I've said throughout my nearly two years commanding coalition air forces, we are focused on a singular enemy: ISIS. We're not looking for a fight with anyone else, but as Secretary Mattis said last week, “If you threaten us, it will be your longest and worst day.”

I'll add my opinion. Kurds do not like to publish reports about their destroyed opponents. The Americans knew exactly who they were working on and, of course, they had a shot. It seems that a force of Russian Wagner Group kontraktniki (contract mercenaries) and pro-Iranian militia attempted to take over what used to be a Conoco gas field about 8 miles east of the Euphrates River. In Syria, the Euphrates River is the 'deconfliction line' with US and Kurdish forces operating east of this line while Russian/Assad/Hezbollah forces remain west of this line. Clearly, the Russians and their allies were in violation of the deconfliction agreement. US/Kurdish forces engaged the attackers with F-16/22 jets, AC-130 gunships, MQ-9 Reaper drones, Apache helicopters, artillery and mortars. Coalition forces first destroyed a column of Syrian tanks in the village of Tabiya, then a Wagner APC/truck convoy that was approaching Deir Ezzor city, and then destroyed Hezbollah forces near the town of Khasham. Syrian/Iranian forces initially forced the action, firing artillery and tank rounds toward US/Kurdish positions. Although US forces won't specify, locals say ~500 KIA (200 Wagner - 300 Syrian/Hezbollah).

Wagner has been tasked by the Kremlin to take Syrian oil fields held by ISIS. It seems that Wagner led the attack on the Conoco gas field and coalition positions. Although Wagner is a PMC, it is always directed by Russian commanders. I can't imagine Moscow ordering such an attack being well aware that US/Kurdish forces controlled this battle space. Did a Russian commander overplay his orders? We'll probably never know because Moscow denies using PMC's [known in Russia as Chastnye Voenniye Companiye (ChVK)] in Syria. That's why there is not a word from the Kremlin about the battle or the inordinate number of Russian dead. PMCs are officially illegal in Russia, but the Kremlin uses them in Syria, eastern Ukraine, Transnistria, and Ossetia. They were used extensively during the two Chechen Wars. They are always Russian Army/Spetznaz combat veterans, usually alcoholics, and vicious. In Chechnya, they shot entire villages and then burned everything to the ground.
