Telegraph.co.uk said:
A space ambassador could be appointed by the United Nations to act as the first point of contact for aliens trying to communicate with Earth.

Mazlan Othman, a Malaysian astrophysicist, is set to be tasked with co-ordinating humanity’s response if and when extraterrestrials make contact. Aliens who landed on earth and asked: “Take me to your leader” would be directed to Mrs Othman. She will set out the details of her proposed new role at a Royal Society conference in Buckinghamshire next week.

Best. Job. Ever.

Although I can't imagine any scenario where aliens bother to even come to earth that ends well for us.

Why would we send someone from the UN to make contact? Wouldn't we want to show them the BEST humanity has to offer, not the most idiotic and annoying?

And why would aliens even bother to contact us? As messed up as we are they are better off watching from a distance with some popcorn.

This is just about a perfect picture of what I saw.

I was just wondering maybe this title was a misprint.

Shouldn't it read: Spacie UN ambassador to appoint E.T. Greeter at large.

Or even spacie UN official official held under mandatory 72 hour mental observation and evaluation after really out there statement about Visitors from beyond, beyond.

I know this much having inter viewed theoretical physicist Michio Kaku that any visitor who comes here would have to be no less than a million years ahead of us with technology that permits INTERDIMENSIONAL TRAVEL or the use of worm holes because of the vast distances involved.

On top of that we better hope they don't bring any communicable diseases the we have no immunity to.

But on a personal note I believe there has to more out there than just anti=matter and empty space with dead planets.

Besides I once saw something I can't identify and I know every means of air travel known to man that was built on earth as far as I know.

It was a sphere of indeterminate size hovering just over the Colorado River just south of Laughlin NV. on that side of the river.

It was perfectly round and was motionless in a 30 mile per hour wind. I was close enough to be able to see it was not tethered but rope or cable. It had no distinguishing marks and hung about 200' off the ground for at least 15 minutes before moving on although I did not see it leave I was summoning a witness and when I went back it was gone.

The gravity well means it's far easier to extract any raw materials they might desire from asteroids or from some of the other orbiting bodies like Jupiter or Saturn's moons, in greater quantities as well. If they came to earth, it's because they want the planet itself.

They'd pay us about as much attention as a lumberjack does the bird's nest in the tree he's about to cut down.

The UN is a joke
Care to share why? Because of this decision?

You do know that probably every first-world country on Earth probably has a similar post and contingency plans for such an event, right?

Agreed. We should send David Bowie. He's already farther out there then anyone else and he rocks.

How many times must this be repeated?

Rape victims in Africa. UN on the ground does nothing

DarFur genocide. UN does nothing

Greatest money scandal in world history, oil for food program. UN members directly involved.

Now please peddle your claims of blissful innocence to these atrocities somewhere else.

I'm well aware of these claims and the vast majority are entirely valid.

I want to know how you expect the UN to do anything when almost none of it's member nations want to even lift a finger to do their part? The US sent a representative to the UN that had, on record, said that the UN building in New York would be all the better for losing the top twenty floors. People give the UN nothing and expect it to do everything, then they point when the UN fails and use that as a justification for not doing anything.

No one expects the UN to do anything of value, because most of it's member nations don't want to lift a finger to do their part. All the more reason to disband the orginization.

Then where do you go to settle international disputes? Where do you go to punish nations for wrongdoing?

The UN say that they are having a hard time deciding between Gaddafi and Ahmadinejad for the role of the ambassador.

But Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that alien interlopers should be treated with caution.

He said: “I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. The outcome for us would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”
Oh how very true.

Do people actually think if Aliens did come to this planet, they'd be all loving and pacifistic. Please.

They'd rape our resources and probably enslave us. No more than what we'd do to others when we travel out of space and discover new planet.

Why couldn't they be like we would be on space travel, I reckon they'd be primarily interested in studying us, just as we would them.

Hah. That is not all humans would do on space travel.
Sure we'd study them but if we were more technologically advanced. You know we'd be bringing back slaves and experimentation.

Sections of humans feel superior to other humans not to mention humans are a very intolerant race. How do you think humans would behave when faced with a Non Human? We'd treat it as inferior.
And if they have stuff on their planet, we'd strip their planet of it and move on when bored.

I think it's very silly to be so certain like that on the mentality of an alien race when we have zero knowledge about it.
Especially when you're speaking about every alien race that would reach this planet.

I think it is more logical than they'd want to come over just to see how it is in Earth. If they are another intelligent race, sure they'd want to explore, expand their knowledge.
But assuming they were like humans, one must take into consideration they are also after new resources and territory.

No one said anything is sure, this is all speculation. If Hawkins isn't 100% certain, no way in hell I am. But I'd take his speculation over anyone elses.
