Elections are set for Sunday (tomorrow) in left-leaning Catalonia and the two socialist parties are at loggerheads. What differentiates them is not political orientation but whether the want to keep Catalonia as part of Spain or to become an independant state. The current coalition in Barcelona is led by a separatist coalition of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and Together for Catalonia (Junts). They were looking set to win until their main rival, the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) which is content to keep Cataonia Spanish chose a popular national politician and former minister of health in Madrid, Salvador Illa, to lead them in this election.

By all accounts the final debate on Catalan TV Sexta must have been something to see where all sorts of name-calling went on but to accuse anyone of being a socialist in Catalonia would be a compliment. Unlike the two-party USA, however, Catalonia with a population of just over 7½ millions has ten parties vieing for power.
