Elections are set for Sunday (tomorrow) in left-leaning Catalonia and the two socialist parties are at loggerheads. What differentiates them is not political orientation but whether the want to keep Catalonia as part of Spain or to become an independant state. The current coalition in Barcelona is led by a separatist coalition of the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and Together for Catalonia (Junts). They were looking set to win until their main rival, the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) which is content to keep Cataonia Spanish chose a popular national politician and former minister of health in Madrid, Salvador Illa, to lead them in this election.

By all accounts the final debate on Catalan TV Sexta must have been something to see where all sorts of name-calling went on but to accuse anyone of being a socialist in Catalonia would be a compliment. Unlike the two-party USA, however, Catalonia with a population of just over 7½ millions has ten parties vieing for power.

In Catalonia Left and Right are not the political blocks, but pro- and anti independence are the blocks. Left wing independence parties cooperate with the right wing ones, anc vice versa.

No socialists will accept VOX in coalition. They are to the right of Partido Popular, the conservative party.

Very few parties would work with VOX. Last time I checked Vox was very weak in Catalonia, has that changed?

Ciudadanos + PP happy into jump into bed with them when it suits. The latest poll has Vox getting 6 seats:

Poll isn't prohibited because of the evil Spanish superstate, just decades of deadlocked Catalan parliamentary bickering.

Should VOX get 6 seats they will be tiny in the 135 seat Catalan parliament.

Indeed. Disappointment for Puigdemont is all I hope for.

But why, Sven.

Living in Catalunya broke me on nationalism. ERC I don't mind, they're left, they're republican, they're Catalan, fair play, does exactly what it says on the tin. Puigdemont just embodies the worst Catalan delusionalism

You are against independence for Catalonia. Personally, I prefer the autonomous region to remain part of Spain also.

Well, as a Valenciano guy in the class I taught in a motorway service station so eloquently put it, 'If they want independence so much I'll be happy to take my chainsaw to the border and push them out to sea as far as La Gomera.'

Deadlock resumed, but with Vox on course for 11 seats:

If VOX suddenly get "kingmaker" position in Catalonia, things will get ugly.

They're not going to. The 2 'unionist parties' they've gone into power with elsewhere in Spain, PP and Ciudadanos fared poorly and there are 2 leftwing separatist parties CUP and the Catalan Podemos who are more likely to take up that role.

Catalan politics usually means there will either be a unionist or a separatist coalition in charge.

Not a chance of that. Neither the independence socialists nor the unionist socialists would allow VOX into a coalition led by either.

Excluding Vox from a seat on the Parliamentary bureau seems to be about the only thing any of the parties can agree on:

And another fail. After years of being the biggest nationalist group the puigdemontists can't handle their no longer being in control of proceedings.

Not registered, but headline says enough:

Elect a president then cross the floor, Puigdemont channelling his inner Baldrick 'cunning plan'. And then the Catalans wonder why the rest of the world is so stubbornly indifferent to their plight.
