From what little I heard on the radio news driving to work, it sounds like one of several possibilities:

Some persons or government testing the airline security for purposes of preventing terrorist attacks.

Terrorists doing the same, but for purposes of carrying out terrorist attacks.

No sane person would tape cell phones together, watches together, tape cell phones to bottles, bring box cutters and knives along, and try to get those items onto a plane - unless one of the two possibilities I mentioned were the case (or something I didn't think of).

I remember once getting asked to open my carry-on, as I had a roll of quarters in it.

I would doubt that these people would have been arrested if it was an official probe of the airline.

If Al Qaeda wanted to hit something. It seems common sense now on what to do if the West is racial profiling Muslims. Pick the most obscure converts to Islam. White people always get past security easier than Arabs or Blacks so its a score on both fronts.
They can be told to deny ever being a Muslim, wear "Western" clothes. Maybe a push up bra and heels if it is a chick. Then success.

The director of the Secret Service today disputed widely-reported claims that President Obama is receiving more death threats than previous presidents.

At a congressional hearing into the White House security breach that took place last week, when Tareq and Michaele Salahi "crashed" the White House state dinner, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan said the current threat level against the president is normal.

"The threats right now ... is the same level as it has been for the previous two presidents at this point in their administrations," Sullivan said.
