(CNN) A tsunami that struck Indonesian coastlines without warning Saturday night killed at least 222 people, left hundreds injured and more than two dozen missing, officials said.

Eyewitnesses described fleeing for their lives as beachfront homes were swept away in the tsunami, which is thought to have been caused by underwater landslides following the volcanic eruption of Krakatoa.

This was an eruption of the so-called 'Son of Krakatoa'. This is what happened in 1883:

1883 eruption of Krakatoa
Event
Description: The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa in the Dutch East Indies began in the afternoon of Sunday, 26 August 1883, and peaked in the late morning of Monday, 27 August when over 70% of the island and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed as it collapsed into a caldera. This event killed over 36,000 people & the blast of the eruption could be heard thousands of miles away.

Crowd screams as Indonesian rock band swept away by tsunami

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Partygoers screamed as tsunami waves smashed into a beachside concert in Indonesia, sending band members tumbling off a collapsing stage, dramatic video footage showed on Sunday.

Some 200 employees of state electricity utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and family members had gathered at the Tanjung Lesung beach for an end-of-year party when the tsunami struck on Saturday night.

Moral to this story: don't live near a volcano if you have the option.

Death toll rises in Indonesia as officials search for missing — and answers — after unexpected tsunami

Scientists confirmed on Monday that the tsunami was triggered by an underwater landslide following the partial collapse of the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano.

The desperate search for survivors continued in Indonesia on Monday, with dozens still missing following the sudden tsunami that hit the country's Sunda Strait on a busy holiday weekend.

More than 370 people were killed, at least 1,400 injured and thousands more displaced when waves crashed ashore without warning on Saturday.

Still not clear why their earthquake/tsunami warning system didn't activate.
