NACO, Arizona — Mexican smuggling gangs have sawed through new segments of border wall 3,272 times over the past three years, according to unpublished U.S. Customs and Border Protection maintenance records obtained by The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act. The government spent $2.6 million to repair the breaches during the 2019 to 2021 fiscal years, the CBP records show. While the agency has acknowledged that smugglers are able to hack through the new barriers built by the Trump administration, the maintenance records show damage has been more widespread than previously known, pointing to the structure’s limitations as an impediment to illegal crossings. Smuggling gangs typically cut the barrier with inexpensive power tools widely available at retail hardware stores, including angle grinders and demolition saws. Once the 18-to-30-foot-tall bollards are severed near the ground, their only remaining point of attachment is at the top of the structure, leaving the steel beam dangling in the air. It easily swings open with a push, creating a gap wide enough for people and narcotics to pass through.
.
.
President Donald Trump built 458 miles of new barriers, primarily in remote areas of New Mexico and Arizona. Trump planned to complete roughly 250 additional miles, but President Biden halted construction after taking office. The Biden administration “continues to call on Congress to cancel remaining border wall funding and instead fund smarter border security measures that are proven to be more effective at improving safety and security at the border,” said Miranda.

And to be clear: that is just the number of individual breaches. The number of times people or drugs passed through is far higher.

“They cut it with a fair amount of precision,” said one person with detailed knowledge of the sawing tactics who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. “You have to look really closely to see it.”

I think we could use some of that mixed border security. It's what the Dems kept passing and the lying Trumpist GOP kept shooting down. Who'd a thunk that a 12,000 year old technology isn't so great at sealing a border?

Oh, but that's not all, the thousands of breaches and the many more times they've been used.... that's the small change.
U.S. agents and ranchers who live along the border say climbing, not cutting, has become the most common way smugglers and migrants attempt to get past the barrier in areas where there are no gaps. The smugglers build tall ladders using scrap wood or metal rebar thin enough to pass between the bollards. They use the ladder to go up the structure, then pass it through the gaps and use it again to climb down onto the U.S. side. They also frequently employ ropes with knots to climb down, and videos on social media show the most athletic climbers have learned to squeeze the bollards between their legs and slide down it like a fire pole.

We told you your wall was a stupid ****ing idea.

On the surface, it 'sounded good' and it was immediate and visible.

So the followers just sucked it right up without looking at it critically. (Even tho that info was published and available) For them, it was 'instant gratification' that The Donald was effective and 'the right choice.'

It would be laughable if not so costly and harmful.

The wall was never meant to stop illegals.

It is simply a campaign slogan for the simple.

Lobbyists/coorporations would never allow a completely effective deterent to illegals.

Let’s be fair.

It was also a way to grift people out of their money too.

The wall was one of those things that was more of a symbol than anything useful

Republicans who struggle to pay their own bills giving their own money to a guy who was given millions of $$$$ by his papa.

If that's not a major con I don't know what is.

Yeah, but at least he hates the right people.

When I was posting on the Hannity board, it's a board filled with insurrection supporters, I posted pictures of Lowe's and hacksalls and wire cutters and rope and ladders. You know, similar to the kind of stuff the OP is talking about.

Nothing like building a wall you can't man.

GENIUS.

Yeah, but at least he hates the right people.
I need to start hating on some Mexicans so I can massively increase my net worth.

Oh, I know. The GOP wants them here. Nobody who didn't want them here and who is in their right mind would refuse bills for mixed border security and demand only a wall that the other party said no to, all while failing to make civil and criminal penalties for employing them so high that they could not be considered costs of business.

Whole thing is a sham. Like..... just about everything GOP.

Yep. You nailed it. Especially the part in bold.

I keep hearing the Dems say how easy it is to secure the border but they have yet to demonstrate it.

Securing the border is expensive. Republicans don't like to be seen spending huge amounts of tax dollars as this is off-brand for them, so they balk at expensive Democratic spending packages that include at least some effective border security measures. Border security is a great campaign tagline, but no one, and I mean no one, actually wants to spend the amount of money it would take to implement workable and effective border security: Democrats rightly put border security in its proper place as far as threats to America go and seek to spend the bulk of that money elsewhere. And to Republicans, a porous border is too valuable as a campaign issue to actually solve once they gain the levers of government.

That's why Republicans campaign on border security: To frighten uneducated red state xenophobes into voting for their party. That's also why they don't bother to actually do anything about it once they get elected. They talk about caravans and invaders and walls so they can position themselves as the only thing standing between good white American folks and brown foreign rapist and drug dealer illegals who are somehow also able to vote democrat, and then when the frightened white Americans elect them they simply drop the "scary foreigner" rhetoric when it comes time to actually spend those tax dollars and rely on the short attention span of their base to forget why they voted for them in the first place.

Border security is basically a minimum viable product by design. Both parties spend just enough money on it to be marginally effective. Ultimately the only difference between the parties is the rhetoric that surrounds the issue, and which voters the rhetoric is directed at. Democrats, at least, are more straightforward about their stance on the issue: "It's important, but let's keep it in perspective." Republicans use deception and propaganda to stoke fear of an invasion of leftist foreigners coming for their land, their jobs, their rights, their guns, and their very identity, and use this existential fear to multiply their votes.

Lmao @ you trying to blame Republicans for the lack of effective legislation/enforcement by Democrats. It is such an absurd notion that it is an insult to ones intelligence to even suggest it.

Democrats ranted and raved during the Trump administration that if we really wanted to secure the borders all we need to do is start jailing the employers. That supposedly would fix it.

Here's a novel idea. Instead of telling us all how easily it can be done, show us.

Dems control congress, pass some laws, throw the evil Americans attractioning the poor helpless illegal immigrants here into jail.

"Dems control congress" lol pretending the Senate doesn't exist, are we?

Walking across where there is no wall is far easier than any breeching. IF so many illegals weren't just walking threw more Border Patrol Agents would be available to back up the walls.
