Trump's Swipe at Martinez Alarms GOP | RealClearPolitics

Donald Trump’s efforts to coalesce the GOP around his candidacy were going well. He charmed lawmakers during a recent visit to Capitol Hill, began to make inroads with House Speaker Paul Ryan, won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association, and generated enthusiasm among holdouts with a new round of polls showing him tied with Hillary Clinton, whose party is facing its own unity challenges.

Then he went to New Mexico.

At a rally in Albuquerque, he lashed out at Republican Gov. Susana Martinez for the state’s economic troubles and the rising number of residents on food stamps. “It’s your governor’s fault,” Trump told the crowd of thousands. “She’s not doing the job.”

Trump took a very public and dramatic swing at a rising star within the GOP ranks. Governor Martinez is a twice-elected Republican Governor from a historically democratic state with a high hispanic population. She is often cited as a potential VP pick specifically because she could, theoretically, help with Mr. Trump's disapproval amongst Latinos and Females.

So why did Trump take a swing at Martinez?

Martinez’s apparent offense? She had not yet endorsed Trump and declined to attend his rally there on Tuesday night.

But that seems really pathetic doesn't it? I mean there are several other prominent Republicans who have yet to endorse Trump - Paul Ryan being a very prominent example who has not endorsed Trump despite false allegations made by Manafort. Could Martinez's race or sex be at least one of the reasons Trump is willing to attack her and not Ryan?

The single best defense that I have seen from Trump surrogates is that Trump is showing his willingness to stand up to colleagues who aren't getting the job done. This is at least a semi-viable argument...although it does have the inevitable effect of helping your colleagues to lose their job. The worst defense is that Trump is attacking her out of frustration at being slow to endorse him. Is the man really so childish and so stupid as to think that attacking these individuals publicly will help garner their support?

Apparently, Martinez does not take kindly to these childish and bullying attacks.

“The governor will not be bullied into supporting a candidate,” her press secretary said in response to Trump’s remarks. “Governor Martinez doesn’t care about what Donald Trump says about her.”

'swipe' meaning truth. TRUMP 2016, YES WE CAN.

False. the GOP was hijacked by the religious right, we true moderate conservatives are taking it back.

Su-u-ure...Gov. Martinez is a real standard-bearer of the religious right. While the populist jerk ignorant of policies and dismissive of constitutional limitations and individual freedoms is a "true moderate conservative".

Even if it were the "truth" (and frankly, I could give two ****s about trying to defend her economic record - even though other Prominent Republicans have done so) - why is it a good idea for a Presidential candidate trying to represent the Republican party to publicly attack the economic record of a rising star within the Republican party?

Particularly when attacking a hispanic female only helps to further solidify the narrative that Trump does not like females or hispanics?

What? Trump's not attacking Martinez because she's female or Hispanic.

Perhaps, during the Presidential debates, he will remove his mask and reveal that he was Andy Kaufman all along.

No, but the argument goes like this - Trump has not attacked Paul Ryan despite his public unwillingness to support Trump just yet. Meanwhile, Martinez - who has done the same (merely withheld support for now) - is being attacked. The difference between these two individuals (they are both prominent and rising stars within the Republican Party after all) is their respective political positions, their race, and their sex.

I suppose one could make the argument that Trump is going easier on Ryan because he needs Congressional support once he takes office and he doesn't need a Governor's support. But that's about the best I can do to explain the difference in Trump's standard without noting that it could be caused by her race or sex.

As far as I can tell, Trump doesn't think in terms of strategy. Whatever feels right for him to say or do at the time, that's what he'll say or do. He's like a chess player who never, ever looks beyond his next move.

Yet these people want him with his finger on the nuclear button. Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

New Mexicos economy is growing at a "snails pace" and is cited as one of the worst economies in the country.

Who's fault SHOULD that be if not an ineffective governor? Should he have NOT pointed out the truth simply because she is a conservative Latina?

Apparently, the reason why Trump attacked her in the first place is because she's latina.

What about Trump isn't pathetic? He's a man-child. The minute he doesn't get exactly his way, starts throwing out insults and crying like a pathetic baby. He's a weak egomaniac, no ability to take criticism. Why some people think he's fit for Head of State, I'll never understand.

Though I agree with what you say about Trump not thinking beyond the moment when using his mouth, he did not turn millions into billions with out looking beyond his next move.

Trump seems to feel that the key to the election is economic policy, both micro and macro and not gaining the support of specific ethnic groups. Trump calling out Republicans with dubious economic records could well strengthen his appeal to these swing voters.

And her conservatism could well be pretty relative.

Being attacked by Trump should help her gain support among the sane voters of her state.

Meanwhile, Martinez - who has done the same (merely withheld support for now) - is being attacked.

But of course, she's done a good deal more than that.

She's been openly critical of his immigration policy, publicly expressed doubts about his border wall proposal, and **** blocked him in front of big money conservative donors.

Unlike Trump, Susana Martinez is a social justice warrior in conservative clothing who has only gotten where she is by playing identity politics.

Her claim to fame is being a Hispanic female; it's what got her elected and it's the reason she's chairing the Republican Governors Association.

She's an empty suit, a one trick pony, as it were.

And Trump is right to criticize her.

But he's not supposed to criticize her, because, you know, she's a Hispanic woman. And God forbid anyone should have the audacity to criticize a woman, or a Hispanic, or, GASP, both!!!

The man is attempting to unite the Republican Party. The only people he should be criticizing are Hillary, Bill, and Barack Obama.

The economic record for these governors can't be the only distinguishing factor. After all, Chris Christie comes from New Jersey where

New Jersey is experiencing the eighth slowest job growth of any state in the nation and is one of 13 states that have not recovered all their jobs lost during the Great Recession.

The point that I was trying to make is that argument would be the argument being made by Trump's political opponents. And it is a very easy one to make and a very difficult argument to disprove.

Had the numbers been heading the other direction, she most certainly would have taken credit for it, so she gets credit for the bad as well as the good. If she and the GOP don't like it, too bad, - that's what real leadership is, taking the blaming and giving the credit.

ROFL - Martinez is an SJW, huh? You really are just buying everything that Trump is selling, huh?

You mention that she has been critical of Trump on his proposal to build a wall (because it is a really, really stupid idea) and of his tone regarding Hispanics, but Martinez has been conservative on immigration policy and worked to repeal a state law granting driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. She joined Republican governors in opposing President Obama’s proposal to bring Syrian refugees to the United States.

And no, Trump isn't stupid to criticize her because of her race or sex (although that certainly doesn't help the situation), Trump is stupid because he is attacking a prominent and popular Republican from a Democratic state that he hopes to flip in the election specifically at a time when he should be solely focused on attacking Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.

So why isn't Trump going after Chris Christie? New Jersey after all is experiencing the 8th slowest job growth of any state in the country and is only one of 13 states to not have fully recovered all of its lost jobs from the recession.
