Trump's push for $2K stimulus checks hits dead end in Senate

President Trump's push to boost the amount of stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000 appears to be dead in the water in the GOP-controlled Senate. Trump is ramping up calls for Congress to increase the amount provided by a recently passed $2.3 trillion deal, an idea that quickly garnered support from Democratic leadership, some House Republicans and a growing number of Senate Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) vowed that the Senate would not pass a stand-alone bill on checks, delivering a death knell to the already uphill chance that the House-passed bill could make it through Congress without significant changes. "The Senate is not going to split apart the three issues that President Trump linked together just because Democrats are afraid to address two of them. McConnell has offered a competing measure that would tie an increase in the checks to removing a legal shield for tech companies and creating a commission to examine the 2020 elections. But that proposal is viewed as a non-starter for Democrats, underscoring that the GOP leader's bill also is unable to pass the Senate.

No $2000 stimulus checks for hurting Americans. Thus we begin the messy divorce of Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump.

Donald Trump - Did Trump suddenly turn altruistic in wanting the $2000 stimulus checks for Americans? No. This was a political move by Trump who is looking ahead to running for president again in 2024. When he actually begins campaigning for the 2024 election, Trump wants to be able to remind Americans that the last thing he did as their president in 2020 was to get them the much needed $2000 stimulus checks. This was a shrewd move by Trump except he made a tactical error that McConnell jumped all over with glee. Trump demanded to bundle the $2000 stimulus checks with 2 Trump demands ..... The first Trump demand is that Congress repeal Section 230 of the 1994 Communications Decency Act. Trump is mad at Twitter for labeling Trump tweets that contain disinformation, and believes that social medis platforms like Twitter and Facebook discriminate against conservatives. Removing Section 230 would allow these social media platforms to be sued in court. Trumps second stimulus bundle demand was new legislation that would forbid the Army from renaming its 10 military bases named after Confederate military officers and/or slave-traders. This is Trump throwing some red meat to his racist supporters in the south. Trump imagined the bundle would force Democrats to pass his demands along with the $2000 stimulus checks. Democrats would have to go along with his extortion demands for the "greater good of the people".

Mitch McConnell - was one happy turtle when he saw Trumps stimulus bundle demands. This meant that he could sink any $2000 stimulus deal and blame it on Trumps 2 bundled demands. Let's be real here. McConnell doesn't give a rat's ass about how badly Americans are suffering. One thing he does care about now is changing his political hat. When the Republican Trump was president from 2016-2020, McConnell didn't really care how much Congress spent as long as it went towards making GOP donors happy. McConnell had political orgasms when Congress passed the $1.5 trillion tax-cut bonanza for the wealthy and corporations in 2017. THAT huge expense was for McConnell's favorite suiters - the wealthy and business interests. But now that Trump lost the election and Democrat Joe Biden will be in the White House 2020-2024, McConnell has to replace his Spend-Away-Hat with his Deficit-Hawk-Hat. Only NOW is Mitch McConnell concerned about the deficit. You get the idea. Trumps tactical bundle mistake allows McConnell to say no to $2000 stimulus checks (far too much money to spend on the Hoi polloi!) and blame his spending intransigence on the Trump bundle.

There is only one way to get around the reborn "Deficit-Hawk-Hat" Mitch McConnell. Take away his slim Senate majority via the January 5, 2021 Senate runoff elections in Georgia. Elect Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

I can guarantee you that Congress would approve the $2000 stimulus checks and perhaps even more if circumstances demand.

Battle over $2K direct payments 'putting tremendous pressure' on Republican caucus

no section 230 repeal. the Democrats had better never cave on that.

Don't be so harsh on Mitch...nor on Nancy, for that matter. They are all swamp dwellers who care more about where their money comes from than about anything that affects American citizens. That's the system they've been working with for decades. They'd be fools to change it just because a President got elected who cares more about American citizens than he does about the personal wealth of politicians.

You want to see the stock market crash? Pass a section 230 repeal...

at least we wouldn't have to hear people complain about the collapsed economy on message boards or in article comments, as those would disappear more quickly than Tweety when it's time to pay a contractor.

Donnie cares about nothing but himself. Mitch cares about nothing but the acquisition of and keeping of power. Pelosi at least has a few drops of the public servant's blood coursing through her veins....if only a few.

Sen Perdue (R-GA) just came-out today to say he supports the 2K stimulus, but only if it has the 230 provision included.

My take on this? Ask your neighbors if they even know the 230 provision, much less give a damn? Then, ask them if they know rents & mortgages are due - tomorrow? Uh, huh.

I think Purdue may have miscalculated, though no idea if it's enough to matter. But still, to bring this up the day before rent/mortgage are due? Who's bright idea was that?

Great phrase!

You may be correct.
Have you read the fine print on some of the campaign donation requests from Trump? Money may not be going where you think it is if you donate.

The issue isn't Trump's donation requests. The issue is Congressmen taking money from globalist donors and their lobbyists in return for favorable legislation tactics.

And yes, I AM correct about that. Do the research.

Here...this will help you get started.

The issue is Trump scammed many donners. The majority of the money did not go to what they thought they were donating for.

Trump is a scammer like many politicians in Congress.
