First Read is your briefing from "Meet the Press" and the NBC Political Unit on the day's most important political stories and why they matter.

WASHINGTON — Heading into Trump's speech last night, we were scratching our heads about what exactly the president would do with the bully pulpit.

Would he announce a national emergency at the border — and simultaneously call for an end to the shutdown — to give himself leverage on the wall? Express support or compassion for federal workers worried about their paychecks? Offer new information or a new pitch to reassure skeptical Republicans that he’s right to stay the course?
================================================
Trump blew this chance by just parroting crap he's spouted for the last 5 years. Government statistics prove that there is no immigration crisis on our southern border but Trump & his stooges keep insisting there is with no evidence.

Do you consider the 11 to 12 million illegals in the US a problem?

Do you consider the 11 to 12 million illegals in the US a problem?

You like fresh vegetables, landscaping services, auto repair, home repairs et al?

Do you consider the 11 to 12 million illegals in the US a problem?

Where did that number come from? And if they are already here, what good would a wall do? And whom else is going to pick fruit & vegetables in the CA sun 12 hours/day & clean hotel rooms?

That money is better spent fixing our crumbling 50+ year old Interstate highway bridges that are collapsing & killing innocent citizens. Trump promised to invest in infrastructure but after 2 years has done nothing.

The wall is his need to fulfill a silly campaign pledge he made to his base. He is afraid that no wall = no 2020 reelection. Trump the failure.

They're already here. You want a wall to keep them in?

To fix this issue is simple... Beef up e-verify.... Put some SERIOUS teeth in fines, and even jail time for ANY business who hire illegals. Take away the 'job' incentive, and they won't want to come here...

But the GOP has never done that, even when they controlled the government because their business donors don't want that, like like hiring cheap labor.

All this bickering and fighting, has ANYONE on the GOP mentioned e-verify? Trump? Nope.. Has anyone mentioned stiffer penalties for businesses who hire illegals? Not that I heard... Why is that?

Why yes I do. Ever heard of migrant farm workers who can come into the US legally. The landscaper I use while Hispanic are American citizens and speak both English and Spanish. Same for home repairs.

Guess you are not up to what the facts are.

The Democrats control the House now. Are they proposing that or are they being held hostage by the progressive sycophants still ******** on social media about ICE raids on businesses? That’s rhetorical.

Funny. Did I say anything about building a wall. No I would prefer they be deported.
I agree that employers need to be held accountable when it can be proven they knew they were hiring an illegal.
Besides E-verify, need to beef up stolen id by illegal aliens.

imo, we are at a crisis with illegal immigration. Politicians have kicked the can down the road for to long. Hence the millions that are in the US illegally.

Yes, they're a problem in that it's a stark contradiction to our stated values as Americans. It's unamerican to allow so many people to exist in a state of perpetual servitude to the rich, who don't like paying living wages. Punish the employer's and watch the numbers of illegal immigrants dwindle.

The current & anticipated future immigration situation at the southern border does not justify a 2,000 mile fence costing currently $5.7B. It's unjustified overkill.

But it would solve for a very serious humanitarian issue.

I remind you of the “golden rule.” “Those with the gold, make the rules.”

Such as? Trump's policies of separating families & sticking them in concentration camps is a major humanitarian problem all by itself.

That's an interesting sentence because a couple of weeks ago there were reports that Trump's golf course hired illegals and possibly supplied them with phony papers.

Tru dat. Despite our rhetoric about equality and justice, we Americans do a lousy job of holding the wealthy accountable for their crimes. We are always ready to punish the poor, though.

If they did not come to the US illegally they would not be in what you consider "servitude". So what your saying is most illegals are of poor skill set and are only suited for manual labor.

Hundreds of abducted children were identified as being used by illegal immigrants to pose as families in 2018 so I don’t have a problem with separating children from adults until those relationships can be verified. If you think those facilities are concentration camps then you need to visit what remains of Auschwitz and crack open a history book for perspective. As for what completing the barrier solves, the gaps in the existing barrier are exploited by predatory smugglers to bring people in here, rob them, and leave them to die. Hundreds of such corpses are found in the Sonora desert every year. The gaps need to be closed and if people want to climb a ladder they can and would rather do that with San Diego on the other side than wander through a gaping hole to be murdered in the middle of nowhere or otherwise perish trying to navigate a desert.

Don't kid yourself. We live in a plutocracy.

plu·to·crat
/ˈplo͞odəˌkrat
noun DEROGATORY
a person whose power derives from their wealth.

plu·toc·ra·cy
/plo͞oˈtäkrəsē
noun
government by the wealthy.
"the attack on the Bank of England was a gesture against the very symbol of plutocracy"
a country or society governed by the wealthy.
plural noun: plutocracies
"no one can accept public policies which turn a democracy into a plutocracy"
an elite or ruling class of people whose power derives from their wealth.
"officials were drawn from the new plutocracy"

A problem? Sure. A pressing problem worth shutting the government down? Not even remotely.

Not true! It’s a bargain basement price!

Your solution for the illegal immigration is...…………………….?

By the way, (look it up yourself), the US already borrows approx. 0.40 of ever dollar spent. So you also support continued overspending. Got it.
