Trump's early trips to Mar-a-Lago cost nearly $14 million: Watchdog report

President Donald Trump's four trips to his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida over four weeks in March and February 2017, including his summit with the Japanese prime minister, cost the government nearly $14 million, according to the results of a nonpartisan government watchdog's investigation obtained by ABC News. The accounting, which reveals that the government also paid roughly $60,000 to Trump's Palm Beach property, provides one of the clearest pictures to date of the costs incurred by the government for the president's travel to his properties. Of the $13.6 million spent by the government on Trump's four trips to Florida, $10.6 million was spent on government aircraft and boats, while another $3 million was spent on transporting, lodging and feeding government personnel associated with the trips, according to the GAO. The Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security incurred a majority of those costs, according to GAO, approximately $8.5 million and $5.1 million, respectively. The costs do not include expenses incurred by local law enforcement, and salaries and benefits paid to government officials who would be paid regardless of travel.

And that's only over four weeks (weekends) in early 2017. You can almost imagine what the current tab might be. But he works so damn hard!

It's cool, it's cool. He's not Obama so we don't care how often he golfs or the money he spends.

But hey, he gave back his salary, so that makes up for part of the cost of one golf outing.

There are too many other things wrong with Trump to go and complain about the fact that it costs money for him to travel and vacation. He does it much more than previous presidents, yes, but I'm not willing to attack him over it.

Agreed. It also costs much more for him to go to new places than Trump who basically stay in either FL or NJ each time.

It wouldn't be such a big thing ... if he hadn't repeatedly attacked Obama for it and promised he wouldn't be taking time for either golf or weekend travel. If he had only broken his word a little, then it would be worth going "meh" over. But after pounding Obama on it, Trump has broken his word on this massively.

Yes, there ARE a lot of other things to criticize him for. But this is still something. It's a reminder of the petty and abusive way he rose to political power. It's a symbol of his dishonesty. It's a symbol of how he thinks the taxpayer coffer is there for him to play with ... not for him to be a responsible steward over. And it's a symbol of the kind of hypocrisy he thinks -- KNOWS -- he can get away with and still have his supporters mobilize to defend him for even worse behavior than what they had fits over Obama doing.

$14 million - in 4 weeks? For him to go to his mansion and play golf?

This is a joke, right?

No joke. The General Accounting Office doesn't joke about government expenditures. That's what it does.

Amen. QFT

The left was attacked because Obama golfed too much. Trump at the time even said that Obama was golfing too much and has claimed on many occasions that he, if elected president, wouldn't have time for golf. But yet he golfs more than Obama. Its not an attack, its just pointing out Trump's and the rights hypocrisy.

Absolutely agree with every word.

Damn. I'm sorry, but that's an absurd amount of money, especially considering how the man constantly screamed about Obama, and assured his clueless supporters that when he was President, he would be too busy to leave the WH.

But it's hypocrisy, and no President in the history of this country has exhibited more hypocrisy than Trump. Ever.

I'd like to see someone counter that. I'm not a Trump supporter, an apologist on occasion and a defender when things are misconstrued, but I can't apologize for nor defend his 180 on Presidential vacation expenditure.

You are completely correct. And the attack, based on what you said, and all of the reporting on how little work he actually does, is completely fair. I just don't see myself changing anyone's mind on trump by pointing out he said he wasn't gonna golf and showing that he golfed all the time. Or that he attacked Obama for vacations and then constantly vacations. Those always seem to be the type of arguments that only bother the people that already don't like the person.

Everything tRump campaigned on was horse ****.<-period

I guess that we can be thankful that he spends most of his time tweeting, watching TV and golfing. We couldn't affoard for him to actually "work" at being president, him being pResdient is bad enough.

And was WORKING: "...March and February 2017, including his summit with the Japanese prime minister, …"

$10.6 million was spent on government aircraft and boats. OVERALL, ABOUT A $MILLION A DAY...SAME AS OBAMA.

From your LINK: In 2016, the GAO estimated that a four-day trip President Obama took to Chicago and Palm Beach in February 2013 cost about $3.6 million. What work did Obama do for our nearly $1 million a day?

And ?
