Since Italy’s birthrate has been below replacement level for decades, and Italian women (and men) aren’t sold on the idea of multiple children, who is going to to be paying the pensions for all the retired folks?

Then there’s the question of who will be doing agricultural work in the grinding heat — not native born Italians.

Every year there seems to be a record breaking heat wave coming north from the Sahara, just as been happening in the last few days. Record heat, and hundreds of out-of-control brushfires in Sicily, Sardegna, and the south of the peninsula.

Also, as a reminder, white Europeans gave us some really destructive wars, genocide even, while fighting each other. That’s some heritage and tradition to preserve.

I have to assume you are joking, otherwise sad to know that unabashed racism still lives in some quarters.

But you may have a point. All that migration from Africa that started in 1619 has harmed our White North American heritage — admittedly after Europeans set out to destroy the heritage of those here before them.

But is no one aware of history of immigration and the bigoted resentments it has caused? In the US, Germans, Irish, Jews, Italians, and others have been attacked. Trump added Muslims and people from countries he defined as “shit holes” to the mix, echoing the glorious history of the Know-Nothings and the KKK.

True, preserving traditions, culture and heritage is not racist. Excluding others as Trump recommends is.

And Europe’s culture has been changed many times by invasions by Caesar, the Huns, Turks, etc. I just visited my father’s birthplace, Sicily. Normans, Greeks, Romans, French, Germans and Arabs all had a hand in making up its culture.
