Trump wants a "Space Force"

I like the idea of cops in space. That's essentially what I see as the purpose of a Space Force.

Space cops? To arrest whom exactly and for what? We'll write Russia a ticket for ejecting feces in the wrong manner?

(And wasn't there a show called that or something, long ago?)

And what gives Trump's Space Force sovereignty over these people? If Russian and Chinese astronauts get into a zero-g fight about the merits of socialism, what gives the Americans a right to also be violent?

Don't you think it's best to be prepared?

How do we pay for it? Trumps administration can't even find a way to afford infrastructure, and we're going to somehow start building a space force?

Don't know. I suggest we make other countries pay for it.

Well I sure hope you join. Someone needs to clean the space latrines.

They'll find snowflakes to do that kind of work.

I like stupid ideas too.

No, because until one stupid nation does it, there's no need. A military force in space is not defensive, and the US has a pretty ****ty record when it comes to wars of aggression. If, as you argue, a military space force is necessary, I'd prefer it come from Europe, or even China, before the US.
You trust China more than the US?

shrug...

If there's a law against it...sure.

I suspect most of them don't really have a problem with the idea, but since it's Trump that put it out there it has to be bad.
I get that anything Trump wants is poison to them but in this case I'm not sure it matters. The left in general does not seem interested in our space program. They rather the money be used on domestic spending. I don't think this is a Trump hate thing as much as I is a disagreement about go spending.

Sure. I don't think militarising space is going to do that though. Your idea of "space police" would work better as a cooperative force between space faring nations rather than a military organisation acting unilaterally.

Bear in mind that we've discovered all sorts of good things as a result of our various efforts to get into space. Even if the force doesn't amount to much (why would it - we don't have the tech for anything remotely resembling a space fleet), there's likely to be things worth learning learned on the way. Though, I do cede that that probability would be much greater if NASA was instead giving the cash.
I think that Trump is meaning the space force is more for defense purposes.

Honestly, I get the feeling that even if this branch was founded, it would more or less just be the Air Force Space Command as it's own branch and possibly more funding as well.

It could expand into something bigger later on, I suppose, but it probably won't be as "cool" as it might have been implied to be for now.

Trump directs military to build a space force that will be separate from the other branches of the service. Does this make any sense to you? I mean we can't repair and replace roads and bridges but we are going to spend billions, and I do mean billions to build a space force? What do you think?

Yes, it makes great sense.

Trump orders establishment of 'space force' as 6th branch of military

President Trump vowed on Monday to make space great again.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Space Council, Trump ordered the Pentagon to immediately establish a national “space force” that would become the sixth branch of the armed forces.

Probably. But we've also learned good things along with bad in terms of researching weaponry/defenses.

I'd much rather this be in NASA, but I can't condemn it as is.

I can support that, but it has to start somewhere.
